Gd-induced electronic structure engineering of a NiFe-layered double hydroxide for efficient oxygen evolution

A new type of Gd-doped hybrid electrocatalyst, Gd-NiFe-LDH@CC, was designed and developed through a one-step hydrothermal approach. The Gd doping enhanced the OER performance by optimizing the electronic structure of NiFe-LDH, increasing oxygen vacancies, and improving binding strength of intermediate species such as HOO*. Additionally, the Gd-NiFe-LDH@CC exhibited superior electrocatalytic activity and stability for the OER compared to NiFe-LDH@CC and commercial RuO2.
