Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking via asymptotically safe dynamical scalegenesis: a walking axicolor and axion

Hiroyuki Ishida et al.

Summary: Breaking the PQ symmetry could lead to hierarchy and triviality problems, but this study proposes a potential solution using concepts like walking dynamics, axion, and composite axion. By utilizing nonperturbative dimensional transmutation and an asymptotically safe fixed point, the PQ scale generation is achieved while protecting the relaxation mechanism of the axion from UV corrections.

Feebly-interacting particles: FIPs 2020 workshop report

P. Agrawal et al.

Summary: With the establishment and maturation of experimental programs focusing on new physics at the LHC, there is a growing interest in exploring the physics of light and feebly-interacting particles as complementary to New Physics at the TeV scale and beyond. FIPs 2020, the first workshop dedicated to this field, brought together experts from various experiments and astrophysics communities to discuss experimental progress and theory models, aiming to enhance collaboration across different fields.

The axion quality problem: global symmetry breaking and wormholes

James Alvey et al.

Summary: Continuous global symmetries may be broken by gravity, posing a threat to certain solutions like the Peccei-Quinn solution to the strong CP problem. Wormholes as a source of gravity-induced global symmetry breaking have important implications for the quality of axions, particularly in non-perturbative Einstein gravity and open String Theory.

Invisible axion search methods

Pierre Sikivie

Summary: The axion was proposed to solve the strong CP problem and provides a solution to the dark matter problem as well. Various methods have been proposed to search for dark matter axions and axions emitted by the Sun, leading to significant constraints on the notion of an invisible axion.

Symmetries in Quantum Field Theory and Quantum Gravity

Daniel Harlow et al.

Summary: This paper refines and establishes a set of old conjectures about symmetries in quantum gravity using the AdS/CFT correspondence. It shows the absence of bulk global symmetries in AdS/CFT and discusses how long-range bulk gauge symmetries lead to global boundary symmetries. The results are extended to higher-form symmetries and the weak gravity conjecture is applied to more general gauge groups.

Axion quality from superconformal dynamics

Yuichiro Nakai et al.

Summary: The paper discusses the possibility of superconformal dynamics inducing the emergence of a global U(1)(PQ) symmetry, solving the strong CP problem through the axion. The theory suggests that fields spontaneously breaking the U(1)(PQ) symmetry make the new quarks massive and only couple to the color SU(3)(C).

A natural and simple UV completion of the QCD axion model

Masaki Yamada et al.

Summary: The PQ mechanism addresses the strong CP problem but introduces challenges in model building, related to the origin, scale, and quality of the PQ symmetry. A UV completed model with extra quarks and anti-quarks separated by branes, along with a hidden gauge field condensation, is proposed to tackle these challenges. The Casimir force of SU(N-H) condensation stabilizes the fifth dimension and ensures the quality of the PQ symmetry.

Flavoured warped axion

Quentin Bonnefoy et al.

Summary: This study considers a 5D extension of the DFSZ axion model that addresses axion quality and fermion mass hierarchy problems. It predicts flavor-dependent, off-diagonal axion-fermion couplings, with different localization methods of Higgs doublets affecting the couplings in both diagonal and off-diagonal flavors.

Ultraviolet behaviour of Higgs inflation models

Ignatios Antoniadis et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate the ultraviolet behavior of Higgs inflation models above the apparent unitarity violation scale caused by the large non minimal coupling to gravity. By computing on-shell 4-point scattering amplitudes in the presence of a large inflaton background, we find that all tree-level amplitudes behave well at high energies below the inflaton background. This result holds true in both the metric and Palatini formulation, regardless of the frame used (Jordan or Einstein), and remains consistent even when an R-2 term is added to the action.

Revisiting isocurvature bounds in models unifying the axion with the inflaton

Guillermo Ballesteros et al.

Summary: This study discusses scenarios in which the spontaneous breaking of the Peccei-Quinn symmetry occurs before or during inflation, and in which axion dark matter arises from the misalignment mechanism, which can be constrained by Cosmic Microwave Background isocurvature bounds. Additionally, non-perturbative effects during reheating may lead to a significant growth of axion perturbations, challenging the assumption that axion perturbations freeze at horizon crossing during inflation.

High-quality axions in solutions to the μ problem

Prudhvi N. Bhattiprolu et al.

Summary: Solutions to the mu problem in supersymmetry based on the Kim-Nilles mechanism naturally include a DFSZ axion with enhanced couplings, where anomaly-free discrete symmetries play a crucial role in protecting the Peccei-Quinn symmetry. These models require at least one pair of strongly interacting vectorlike multiplets at an intermediate scale to be free of the domain wall problem, making them promising for proposed axion searches.

Exact accidental U(1) symmetries for the axion

Luc Darme et al.

Summary: We studied a class of gauge groups that can provide a perturbatively exact Peccei-Quinn symmetry, and proposed a model in which the axion quality problem is resolved at all operator dimensions. These gauge groups can also enforce and protect accidental symmetries of the clockwork type, as demonstrated in a toy model where an invisible axion results from a low scale breaking of gauge and global symmetries.

An even lighter QCD axion

Luca Di Luzio et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate the possibility of a lighter axion as a solution to the strong CP problem compared to the canonical QCD axion, using the ZN symmetry proposed by Hook. The total potential is approximated by a single cosine in the large N limit, leading to an exponentially suppressed axion mass formula. The enhanced axion interactions relative to the canonical QCD axion have significant implications for experiments searching for axion-like particles and solving the strong CP problem.

Preheating from target space curvature and unitarity violation: Analysis in field space

Yohei Ema et al.

Summary: The study focuses on particle production and unitarity violation caused by a curved target space right after inflation. A semiclassical formula for the spectrum of produced particles is derived using the inflaton field value as the time variable, along with a simple condition for unitarity violation during preheating. The conservation of unitarity during inflation is shown to depend on both the target space curvature and the height of the inflaton potential at the end of inflation.
