Prediction of the quasi-biennial oscillation with a multi-model ensemble ofQBO-resolving models

Timothy N. Stockdale et al.

Summary: A multi-model study found that models have high skill in predicting the phase evolution of the QBO at 20-30 hPa, but variable quality in other aspects of QBO prediction. Models tend to have too weak QBO easterlies and can be either too strong or weak in QBO westerlies. Despite shortcomings, a multi-model ensemble can provide accurate and reliable QBO forecasts up to at least a year ahead.

Predictability of European Winters 2017/2018 and 2018/2019: Contrasting influences from the Tropics and stratosphere

Jeff Knight et al.

Summary: This study examined European winters of 2017-18 and 2018-19, analyzing the impact of sudden stratospheric warming events and the performance of the Met Office seasonal prediction system. It found that changes in the tropical troposphere and extratropical stratosphere can influence the North Atlantic-European atmospheric circulation, while the Madden-Julian Oscillation may play a critical role in specific meteorological events.

Sudden Stratospheric Warmings

Mark P. Baldwin et al.

Summary: Sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs) are impressive fluid dynamical events characterized by large and rapid temperature increases in the winter polar stratosphere, which are usually caused by the breaking of planetary-scale waves propagating upwards from the troposphere. SSWs result in the breakdown of the polar vortex, along with rapid descent and warming of air in polar latitudes, affecting tropospheric weather and potentially leading to cold air outbreaks over North America and Eurasia.

The 2019 Southern Hemisphere Stratospheric Polar Vortex Weakening and Its Impacts

Eun-Pa Lim et al.

Summary: This study provides an overview of a rare Southern Hemisphere stratospheric warming event in 2019, which led to a significant weakening of the polar vortex and dramatic temperature rise in the Antarctic stratosphere. The impacts of this event resulted in a record-breaking Antarctic warming compared to the previous one in 2002, with the vortex winds and temperatures moving downward to the surface and affecting the southern annular mode. Advanced seasonal forecast systems accurately predicted the vortex weakening and the development of negative SAM as early as late July.

The MJO-QBO Relationship in a GCM with Stratospheric Nudging

Zane Martin et al.

Summary: Observational studies have shown a strong connection between the intraseasonal Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) and the stratospheric quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO), but global climate models have failed to reproduce this link. Using a current-generation climate model, the authors were able to capture QBO signals well with stratospheric nudging, but still did not find an MJO-QBO connection in their ensemble of simulations.

The Efficiency of Upward Wave Propagation near the Tropopause: Importance of the Form of the Refractive Index

Israel Weinberger et al.

Summary: The study examines the connection between the polar stratospheric vortex and the Eliassen-Palm flux in the lower stratosphere and upper troposphere, focusing on upward wave propagation near the tropopause. Different versions of the index of refraction are evaluated, with the original index including critical terms ignored by Matsuno. The study also shows that vertical gradients in buoyancy frequency play a significant role in wave propagation near the tropopause.

Northern hemisphere cold air outbreaks are more likely to be severe during weak polar vortex conditions

Jinlong Huang et al.

Summary: Research shows that a weakened Arctic stratospheric polar vortex significantly increases the risk of severe cold air outbreaks in mid-latitude East Asia and Europe; the vortex affects the outbreaks by modifying the transport of cold air masses; using Granger causality analysis can provide predictive information for severe cold air outbreaks in multiple Northern Hemisphere regions.

The influence of the quasi-biennial oscillation on the Madden-Julian oscillation

Zane Martin et al.

Summary: The stratospheric quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) and the tropospheric Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) are strongly linked in boreal winter. Observations show that MJO is stronger and longer-lasting during winters with easterly QBO winds. Despite the global impacts of the QBO-MJO connection, the mechanisms driving this link remain uncertain. Most numerical models are unable to reproduce the observed QBO-MJO relationship, indicating biases or deficiencies in the models' representation of key physical processes. Further research is needed to establish a working mechanism and improve model simulations of the QBO-MJO connection.

Impact of sudden stratospheric warmings on United Kingdom mortality

Andrew J. Charlton-Perez et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the link between sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs) and increased mortality in the UK, particularly following cold weather events. SSW associated mortality peaks between 3 and 5 weeks after the central date, leading to an average of 620 additional deaths during this period. Sub-seasonal forecasts during SSWs could potentially benefit health and social care systems.
