2+2=3: Making Ternary Phases through a Binary Approach

Andrew P. Justl et al.

Summary: Synthetic organic chemists often use retrosynthetic approach and named reactions to target complex molecules, while complex inorganic compounds can be synthesized through simple mechanochemical reactions of the elements. However, complex phases involving multiple elements can lead to competing phases, which may impact the desired properties. This study elucidates the reaction pathway from the elements to the formation of the complex ternary phase Yb14AlSb11 through quenching experiments, and synthesizes high-purity Yb14MnSb11 and Yb14MgSb11 through stoichiometric reactions.

Discovery of multivalley Fermi surface responsible for the high thermoelectric performance in Yb14MnSb11 and Yb14MgSb11

Christopher J. Perez et al.

Summary: The Zintl phases Yb14MSb11 exhibit high thermoelectric performance due to a unique high valley degeneracy band structure, especially in Yb14MnSb11. Studying the solid solution Yb14Mg1-xAlxSb11 provides insights into other thermoelectric systems. The model predicts that an increase in carrier concentration can lead to zT > 1.5 in Yb14MSb11 systems.

Possibility of interstitial Na as electron donor in Yb14MgSb11

Naomi A. Pieczulewski et al.

Summary: In this study, Na-doping Yb14MgSb11 was investigated as a potential route to increase carrier concentration based on an improved multiband model. Experimental transport data showed that Na increased the Seebeck coefficient and resistivity, acting as an interstitial electron donor to decrease hole carrier concentration under the synthesis and processing conditions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations provided insights on how Na modified the carrier concentrations by behaving as a substitutional or interstitial defect depending on the equilibrium phase.

Ultralow Thermal Conductivity and High Thermopower in a New Family of Zintl Antimonides Ca10MSb9 (M = Ga, In, Mn, Zn) with Complex Structures and Heavy Disorder

Alexander Ovchinnikov et al.

Summary: A new family of Zintl antimonides with the approximate composition Ca10MSb9 has been synthesized using two different methods, resulting in semiconducting behavior with ultralow thermal conductivity and high Seebeck coefficient. The disordered variant of the tetragonal Ca10LiMgSb9 structure type contributes to the charge-balanced composition, leading to a high thermoelectric figure of merit exhibited by the In representative without optimization.

Complex Structural Disorder in the Zintl Phases Yb10MnSb9 and Yb21Mn4Sb18

Sviatoslav Baranets et al.

Summary: The systematic investigation of the Yb-Mn-Sb ternary system resulted in the discovery of the novel phase Yb10MnSb9. The crystal structure was found to be complex and highly disordered, with high values of Seebeck coefficient and semiconductor behavior. Both Yb10MnSb9 and the previously reported Yb21Mn4Sb18 phase exhibit disordered fragments in their structures, indicating similarities in structural chemistry within the system.
