A review of past changes in extratropical cyclones in the northern hemisphere and what can be learned for the future

Christoph C. Raible et al.

Summary: This review presents an overview of the variability and projected future changes of extratropical cyclone characteristics in the context of past climate periods, emphasizing the impacts of climate mean state changes on cyclone characteristics. Dynamic processes are found to play an important role in cyclone-induced precipitation variations in the past, while future changes in cyclone-related precipitation are primarily driven by thermodynamic processes. A paleoclimatic perspective can enhance process understanding and help in better understanding future changes in extratropical cyclones and associated characteristics.

A new global ice sheet reconstruction for the past 80000 years

Evan J. Gowan et al.

Summary: The uncertainty of past global ice sheet evolution, especially the issue of missing ice volume during the Last Glacial Maximum, has been a challenge. Researchers have developed a global ice sheet reconstruction for the past 80,000 years, resolving the missing ice problem during the Last Glacial Maximum. However, discrepancies with proxy-based sea level reconstructions before the Last Glacial Maximum highlight the complexity of the relationship between marine delta O-18 and sea level changes.

Increased autumn and winter precipitation during the Last Glacial Maximum in the European Alps

C. Spoetl et al.

Summary: The study suggests that the glacier advance in the European Alps during the Last Glacial Maximum was related to subsurface warming and driven by heavy snowfall late in the year, likely sourced from the Mediterranean Sea. These results indicate that heavy snowfall during autumn and early winter was the main factor influencing glacier growth during this period of the Last Glacial Maximum in the European Alps.

The role of land cover in the climate of glacial Europe

Patricio Velasquez et al.

Summary: Earth system models exhibit significant discrepancies in simulating the climate of continents at the Last Glacial Maximum, potentially due to factors such as model resolution and incomplete representation of Earth system processes. Through a coupled land-atmosphere modelling experiment, high-resolution models over ice-free regions of Europe achieved quasi-equilibrium and showed reasonable agreement with independent reconstructions. Sensitivity simulations revealed the significant impact of land cover on the regional climate during the Last Glacial Maximum.

The PMIP4 Last Glacial Maximum experiments: preliminary results and comparison with the PMIP3 simulations

Masa Kageyama et al.

Summary: The new generation of climate models used for Last Glacial Maximum simulations show a wider range of global average temperatures and precipitation compared to the previous generation. While there are significant differences in individual model simulations, the overall trends are similar. The PMIP4 simulations generally depict a colder and drier global state than the PMIP3-CMIP5 simulations.
