China's food loss and waste embodies increasing environmental impacts

Li Xue et al.

Summary: Characterizing and quantifying food loss and waste (FLW) is crucial for sustainable food systems. This study in China provides FLW data for various commodities at different stages of the food supply chain, along with associated environmental footprints and effectiveness of FLW reduction scenarios. The research reveals that a significant amount of food is lost or wasted annually in China, with postharvest handling and out-of-home consumption activities being major contributors.
