Challenges and transformative opportunities in superconductor vortex physics

Serena Eley et al.

Summary: In superconductors, the motion of vortices can introduce unwanted dissipation, but material defects can immobilize vortices, significantly improving superconductor properties. While there has been research on increasing vortex pinning strength, effective materials engineering remains a challenge.

Universal critical exponents of the magnetic domain wall depinning transition

L. J. Albornoz et al.

Summary: Experimental measurements allow the direct determination of the velocity and correlation length exponents of depinning transition in a ferrimagnetic GdFeCo thin film with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The whole family of exponents characterizing the transition is deduced, indicating that the depinning of magnetic domain walls is better described by the quenched Edwards-Wilkinson universality class.

Mean-field theories for depinning and their experimental signatures

Cathelijne ter Burg et al.

Summary: Mean-field theory approximates extended systems using a few variables, such as the position and statistics of forces for elastic manifolds. Two models, ABBM and DPM, can be used to simulate force distributions. However, microscopic disorder force-force correlations cannot grow linearly and must be bounded, leading to the need for an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process to account for both small and large scales. Experimental signatures of this transition can be studied through response and correlation functions.
