Polarisation-dependent single-pulse ultrafast optical switching of an elementary ferromagnet

Hanan Hamamera et al.

Summary: This study investigates the physics of laser-induced ultrafast magnetization dynamics in bulk nickel and predicts magnetization reversal with a single pulse using time-dependent electronic structure simulations. The findings reveal that a sub-picosecond laser pulse can reverse the magnetization of bulk nickel, accompanied by demagnetization. The central mechanism involves ultrafast light-induced torques acting on the magnetization, which are only effective with circularly polarized laser pulses on the plane containing the initial magnetization orientation.

Ultrafast spin dynamics in inhomogeneous systems: a density-matrix approach applied to Co/Cu interfaces

Summary: This study simulates ultrafast spin dynamics on femto- to picosecond timescales in a Co/Cu bilayer using a density-operator approach. The importance of interfaces for ultrafast transport phenomena and demagnetisation processes is confirmed, along with the observation of charge refilling from Cu d orbitals into Co d orbitals.

Spin dynamics from a constrained magnetic tight-binding model

Ramon Cardias et al.

Summary: This study presents the dynamics of coupled atomic moments in the tight-binding approximation. By implementing an angular penalty functional in the energy to capture magnetic effective fields, the motion of local magnetic moment orientations is observed to be faster than changes in magnitude. Comparisons with classical atomistic spin dynamics on Fe, Co, and Ni magnetic clusters show consistent effective atomic magnetic fields based on Heisenberg's exchange interaction.

Exchange constants for local spin Hamiltonians from tight-binding models

Simon Streib et al.

Summary: This article discusses the mapping of tight-binding electronic structure theory to local spin Hamiltonians, aiming to improve the accuracy of effective magnetic Weiss fields for noncollinear states by including a linear term in the Hamiltonian. The formalism is validated through numerical calculations for iron dimers and chains.

Exchange interactions and magnetic force theorem

I. Solovyev

Summary: This article critically reexamines the interatomic exchange interactions in the framework of cSDFT, and discusses the impacts of spin rotations on total energy change. Differences between magnetic force theorem and exact theory in describing the relation between exchange interactions and response function have significant consequences for various materials. The study emphasizes the importance of considering ligand spins and selecting appropriate variables for describing spin rotations within cSDFT theory.
