Post-Newtonian gravitational and scalar waves in scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

Banafsheh Shiralilou et al.

Summary: This paper models the gravitational wave emission of inspiralling binaries in scalar Gauss-Bonnet gravity theories, providing ready-to-implement gravitational wave and scalar waveforms as well as conducting a parameter space study. The study emphasizes the crucial role of black hole scalar charges in the detectability of deviation from general relativity, laying important foundations for future precision tests of gravity.

Parametrized tests of post-Newtonian theory using principal component analysis

M. Saleem et al.

Summary: Searching for deviations from general relativity (GR) beyond one post-Newtonian (PN) phasing coefficients, known as a multiparameter test, is not effective with the current sensitivity of gravitational-wave detectors. However, principal component analysis (PCA) can address this issue by constructing linear combinations of PN parameters that are better constrained by gravitational-wave observations. By analyzing binary black hole events detected during the first and second observing runs of LIGO/Virgo, the study shows that two dominant principal components can capture the essence of a multiparameter test. Moreover, using simulated non-GR signals, the method is capable of excluding GR with high confidence and recovering the injected values of the non-GR parameters with good precision.

Constraints on Einstein-dilation-Gauss-Bonnet gravity from black hole-neutron star gravitational wave events

Zhenwei Lyu et al.

Summary: In this paper, the authors focus on testing the Einstein-dilation Gauss-Bonnet gravity theory using recent gravitational wave observations. They derive upper bounds on the coupling constant of the theory by analyzing neutron star black hole binaries and binary black hole events. The authors also investigate the impact of higher-order corrections to the waveform phase on the bounds.

Morphology-independent test of the mixed polarization content of transient gravitational wave signals

Katerina Chatziioannou et al.

Summary: This study introduces a model-independent analysis method for detecting and characterizing mixed tensor and nontensor components in transient gravitational wave signals, including those from compact binary coalescences. This method can constrain the presence of scalar or vector polarization modes on top of the tensor modes predicted by general relativity.

Improved gravitational-wave constraints on higher-order curvature theories of gravity

Scott E. Perkins et al.

Summary: By observing gravitational waves from compact binaries, researchers can test general relativity and its modifications in strong and dynamic gravitational fields. The study compared two extensions to general relativity, dynamical Chern-Simons and Einstein-dilaton-Gauss-Bonnet theories, and strengthened constraints on the coupling parameter in the latter theory. The results also showed the robustness of the constraints to various factors such as waveform models and uncertainties in the nature of compact objects.

Tests of general relativity with binary black holes from the second LIGO-Virgo gravitational-wave transient catalog

R. Abbott et al.

Summary: Gravitational waves are used to test general relativity in strong-field regimes, with evaluations of data consistency showing no evidence for new physics beyond general relativity. Modifying waveform parameters and constraints on Lorentz-violating coefficients have improved past limitations, while analysis of merger remnants and polarization confirms agreement with theoretical predictions.

Probing fundamental physics with gravitational waves: The next generation

Scott E. Perkins et al.

Summary: Gravitational wave observations of compact binary mergers are already providing tests of general relativity and constraints on modified gravity. The sensitivity upgrades of the instruments and uncertainties in astrophysical compact binary populations are crucial in determining the impact on investigating fundamental physics with gravitational waves. Using a stacked Fisher matrix analysis, future theory-agnostic bounds on modifications of general relativity and specific theories can be thoroughly investigated.

BayesWave analysis pipeline in the era of gravitational wave observations

Neil J. Cornish et al.

Summary: BayesWave is an algorithm for analyzing gravitational wave transient signals through frame functions and trans-dimensional sampling, adapting the model complexity to data requirements. The flexibility of the algorithm allows for a variety of analyses, including reconstructing unmodeled signals, cross-checks for compact binaries, and separating coherent signals from incoherent instrumental noise transients.
