Creation and annihilation of mobile fractional solitons in atomic chains

Jae Whan Park et al.

Summary: The study observed the movement of fractionalized phase defects in atomic chains formed along step edges of silicon surfaces, showing that these solitons can have fractional charges and can be created and annihilated at desired locations through current pulses. These mobile and manipulable topological solitons may serve as robust, topologically protected information carriers in future information technology.

Structure Inversion Asymmetry and Rashba Effect in Quantum Confined Topological Crystalline Insulator Heterostructures

Rafal Rechcinski et al.

Summary: Structure inversion asymmetry is an inherent feature of quantum confined heterostructures with non-equivalent interfaces, leading to spin splitting of electron states and strong effects on electronic band structure, particularly prominent in topological insulators. The effect can be controlled and enhanced by modifying the surface conditions, affecting the spin splitting decisively depending on hybridization and quantum well width. The findings open up new possibilities for tuning such systems for device applications.

Magnetoconductance in epitaxial bismuth quantum films: Beyond weak (anti)localization

Doaa Abdelbarey et al.

Summary: The study on the complex behavior of magnetoconductance of Bi films grown epitaxially on Si(111) substrates reveals various contributions to magnetoconductance, with all components showing isotropic properties in two dimensions. The interplay between 2D and quantized 3D states at the Fermi surface of ultrathin bismuth quantum films provides deep insight into electronic transport in quantized and partly spin split bands.

Surface localized phonon modes at the Si(553)-Au nanowire system

Julian Plaickner et al.

Summary: The vibrational properties of the Si(553)-Au surface were studied using Raman spectroscopy and ab initio calculations, revealing surface localized phonon modes and temperature-dependent mode shifts. The low-energy spectral features were attributed to vibrations within the Au chain, while higher energy features were mostly localized at the Si step edge. Structural models compatible with measured spectra at different temperatures were identified based on specific displacement patterns.
