Improving local prevalence estimates of SARS-CoV-2 infections using a causal debiasing framework

George Nicholson et al.

Summary: Global and national surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 epidemiology is based on targeted testing of symptomatic individuals, but these data are often biased. A causal framework described in the study provides debiased estimates by combining targeted test counts and randomized surveillance data.

Area level deprivation and monthly COVID-19 cases: The impact of government policy in England

Karyn Morrissey et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between area level deprivation and COVID-19 cases in England and finds a significant association, which reverses over time. The analysis suggests that certain government policies, such as premature easing of restrictions in high case areas and the introduction of a regional tiered system, may have unintended negative consequences on the spread of the pandemic.

Ethnic differences in SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19-related hospitalisation, intensive care unit admission, and death in 17 million adults in England: an observational cohort study using the OpenSAFELY platform

Rohini Mathur et al.

Summary: The study found that some minority ethnic populations in England have higher risks of testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 and experiencing adverse COVID-19 outcomes compared to the White population, even after adjusting for sociodemographic, clinical, and household characteristics.

Ethnic variation in outcome of people hospitalised during the first COVID-19 epidemic wave in Wales (UK): an analysis of national surveillance data using Onomap, a name-based ethnicity classification tool

Daniel Rh Thomas et al.

Summary: During the first wave of the COVID-19 epidemic in Wales, ethnic minorities were found to have higher proportions of positive SARS-CoV-2 tests, hospitalizations, and admissions to intensive care. Older age and male gender, but not ethnicity, were associated with death in hospitalized patients in Wales. Targeted prevention strategies should be implemented to address the disproportionate impact on ethnic minority communities.
