Optical-domain spectral super-resolution via a quantum-memory-based time-frequency processor

Mateusz Mazelanik et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a method to overcome the resolution limitation in spectroscopy by utilizing the full spectral information of the optical field. The researchers employ an optical quantum memory with spin-wave storage and an embedded processing capability to implement a time-inversion interferometer, projecting the optical field in the symmetric-antisymmetric mode basis. The tailored measurement achieves higher resolution and requires fewer photons compared to conventional methods.

A quantitative comparison of amplitude versus intensity interferometry for astronomy

Manuel Bojer et al.

Summary: This article provides a comparative analysis of the performance of amplitude and intensity interferometry, and discusses the fundamental resolution limit that can be achieved in any physical measurement. By studying the separation between two distant thermal point sources, the article explores optimal estimation theory in stellar interferometry and finds that in certain conditions, the large baseline achievable in intensity interferometry can compensate for the reduced signal strength.

Superresolution Linear Optical Imaging in the Far Field

A. A. Pushkina et al.

Summary: The resolution of optical imaging devices is limited by the diffraction of light. Superresolution microscopy techniques exploit optical nonlinearities, nonclassical properties of the illumination beam, or near field probing for active interaction with the object. A new technique based on passive analysis of light from the object using spatial modes has been demonstrated for 2D imaging with twofold resolution enhancement.

Quantum Limits of Superresolution in a Noisy Environment

Changhun Oh et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the ultimate quantum limit of resolving two identical sources in a noisy environment, showing that the quantum Fisher information for separating objects converges to zero in the presence of noise. On the other hand, noiseless cases exhibit superresolution. Additionally, false excitation on measurements also leads to classical Fisher information approaching zero as the separation decreases.

Super-resolution optical fluctuation imaging-fundamental estimation theory perspective

Stanislaw Kurdzialek et al.

Summary: This paper provides a quantitative analysis of super-resolution imaging techniques utilizing temporal fluctuations of luminosity of sources to overcome the Rayleigh limit. It introduces a resolution gain figure of merit and derives fundamental resolution limits scaling as the fourth-root of the mean luminosity of sources. The study focuses on cumulant-based image processing techniques, known as stochastic optical fluctuation imaging, and considers the impact of limited photon number and sampling time.

Moment-based superresolution: Formalism and applications

Summary: In this work, a simple superresolution protocol is introduced to estimate the separation between two thermal sources using the average value of a single accessible observable. The method is shown to saturate the Cramer-Rao bound even in the presence of noise.

Coherence effects on estimating general sub-Rayleigh object distribution moments

Kevin Liang et al.

Summary: Quantum Fisher information and signal-to-noise ratio bounds are derived for estimating moments of partially coherent objects, showing less restrictive bounds in the sub-Rayleigh regime compared to the incoherent case. This opens up the possibility of more accurate estimation of object distribution moments when the object is partially coherent.

Superresolution in interferometric imaging of strong thermal sources

Yunkai Wang et al.

Summary: Imaging using interferometer arrays based on the Van Cittert-Zernike theorem has shown potential for superresolution. By considering the fundamental quantum limit and proposing measurement techniques, the study demonstrates the possibility of achieving superresolution for resolving two thermal point sources of any strength in interferometer arrays.

Discrimination and estimation of incoherent sources under misalignment

J. O. de Almeida et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of misalignment errors on super-resolution imaging through demultiplexing processes. Although full restoration of super-resolution capabilities is not possible, the negative impact of misalignment on sensitivity can be significantly reduced by partially correcting the dominant transverse modes. In estimation and discrimination tasks involving two incoherent point sources, the study reveals the exact relations between misalignment and the minimal resolvable separation, as well as the probability of error, especially in the case of long interrogation times.
