Dilution impacts on smoke aging: evidence in Biomass Burning Observation Project (BBOP) data

Anna L. Hodshire et al.

Summary: Initial smoke organic aerosol mass concentrations can predict changes in smoke aerosol aging markers, number concentration, and number mean diameter; cores of plumes have higher concentrations than edges; on the plume edges, the organic aerosol is more oxygenated, while a marker for primary biomass burning aerosol emissions has decreased in relative abundance compared to the plume cores.

Chemical composition of PM2.5 in October 2017 Northern California wildfire plumes

Yutong Liang et al.

Summary: Recent wildfires in the western United States have become more frequent and intense, impacting human health. The analysis of organic aerosols from wildfire emissions revealed compounds such as sugars, mono-carboxylic acids, and aromatic compounds. The health impacts of the majority of compounds detected in smoke remain unknown, and the balance between evaporated and secondary organic carbonaceous compounds may affect pollution levels.

Emissions of intermediate-volatility and semi-volatile organic compounds from domestic fuels used in Delhi, India

Gareth J. Stewart et al.

Summary: Biomass burning emits a complex mixture of intermediate-volatility and semi-volatile organic compounds (I/SVOCs), which are more toxic and less understood than typical volatile organic compounds in ambient air. A new analytical method successfully detected over 3000 peaks of I/SVOC species with unique mass spectra. Gas- and particle-phase emission factors for 21 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were derived to study the impact of different solid fuels combustion emissions.
