The thermal properties of hydrothermally altered andesites from La Soufriere de Guadeloupe (Eastern Caribbean)

Michael J. Heap et al.

Summary: The study investigates the thermal properties of variably altered rocks from different volcanic regions. The results show that thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity decrease with increasing porosity, while specific heat capacity remains relatively unchanged. The effect of alteration on thermal conductivity depends on the rock type, with some rocks showing an increase in thermal conductivity with increasing alteration. Therefore, alteration-induced changes in the thermal properties should be considered when interpreting volcano heat flux data.

Geophysical imaging of the Yellowstone hydrothermal plumbing system

Carol A. Finn et al.

Summary: The nature of Yellowstone National Park's plumbing system linking deep thermal fluids to its thermal features is not well understood. Our study provides a detailed view of the pathways of the Yellowstone hydrothermal system using geophysical data. We found that the majority of thermal features are located above high-flux conduits along buried faults capped with clay. Shallow pathways feed groundwater into basins, where it mixes with thermal fluids from vertical conduits. These mixed fluids then emerge at the surface and flow outwards along deeper layers, resulting in the observed geochemical signatures.

Gas Monitoring of Volcanic-Hydrothermal Plumes in a Tropical Environment: The Case of La Soufriere de Guadeloupe Unrest Volcano (Lesser Antilles)

Severine Moune et al.

Summary: Fumarolic gas survey is crucial for detecting potential precursors of violent volcanic eruptions, and the data analysis in this study shows that the compositions and fluxes of fumarolic gas emissions are correlated with the evolution of volcanic activity and other parameters. The study also demonstrates that even under tropical conditions with high humidity and rainfall, multi-gas surveys can distinguish signals of volcanic unrest from secondary changes in degassing.

Hydrothermally induced edifice destabilisation: The mechanical behaviour of rock mass surrounding a shallow intrusion in andesitic lavas, Pinnacle Ridge, Ruapehu, New Zealand

S. P. Mordensky et al.

Summary: This study explores the deformation behavior of volcanic materials from seven geotechnical units associated with a small, shallow intrusion at Pinnacle Ridge, Ruapehu, New Zealand. The results show that the deformation behavior of volcanic rocks is largely influenced by porosity and hydrothermal alteration, which have significant implications for volcanic stability assessments. Finite element modeling demonstrates that even minor increases in pore pressure can change slope failure type, and the presence of low-permeability hydrothermal vein material can reduce slope stability.

The tensile strength of hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks

Michael J. Heap et al.

Summary: The tensile strength of volcanic rocks plays a crucial role in understanding volcanic processes and optimizing energy production in volcanic geothermal reservoirs. This study presents an experimental investigation of the tensile strength of variably altered volcanic rocks, revealing that both porosity and alteration significantly affect the tensile strength. The findings suggest that future modelling should consider the tensile strength of hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks.

David E. Jessop et al.

Summary: This study analyzed volcanic unrest at La Soufriere de Guadeloupe using airborne thermal camera surveys and in situ measurements. The results showed that the volcano emits 36.5 +/- 7.9 MW of heat, with dominant fumarolic heat flux. The increasing instability of the volcano and the emergence of new high-flux fumaroles highlight the importance of continued surveillance and research strategies.

Determining physical and mechanical volcanic rock properties via reflectance spectroscopy

Lauren N. Schaefer et al.

Summary: By utilizing mineralogical-physical-mechanical relationships, rock properties can be derived from rapid, non-invasive reflectance spectroscopy measurements, particularly suited for volcanic rocks. The correlations of various physical and mechanical properties of altered volcanic rocks with reflectance spectroscopy indicate the presence and degradation of iron-bearing minerals, allowing for estimation of rock properties directly from such measurements. Ultimately, the use of aerial or satellite imaging spectroscopy could enable the creation of geotechnical maps at the scale of volcanoes.

Mechanical and topographic factors influencing lava dome growth and collapse

Claire E. Harnett et al.

Summary: The hazards of lava dome collapse are closely related to their morphology and internal structure, which can be influenced by rock strength and material behavior. Unstable talus slopes and renewed growth of domes can lead to collapse, even in domes with high rock strength. Weakening of crater walls can also trigger sector collapse of domes.

Synthesis of hydrothermal alteration, rock mechanics and geophysical mapping to constrain failure and debris avalanche hazards at Mt. Ruapehu (New Zealand)

Summary: Composite volcanoes such as Mt. Ruapehu can weaken over time due to hydrothermal alteration, potentially causing volcano collapse and debris avalanches. By studying rock mechanics, mineralogy, hyperspectral imaging, and aero-magnetic data, researchers have developed models to predict potential flank failure zones on Mt. Ruapehu, with the southwest and west flanks identified as having the highest probability of collapse.

The mechanical behaviour and failure modes of volcanic rocks: a review

Michael J. Heap et al.

Summary: The microstructure and mineralogy of volcanic rocks are diverse and complex, affecting their mechanical behavior. Parameters such as porosity, void space partitioning, pore and crystal size, and alteration, as well as external factors like water, strain rate, and temperature, all play a role in determining the uniaxial compressive strength of volcanic rocks. Through experimental data and analysis, differences between brittle and ductile mechanical behavior in volcanic rocks are highlighted, with discussions on factors like stress-strain curves, porosity evolution, and acoustic emission activity during deformation experiments. The study also touches upon the fracture toughness, mechanical properties, and failure modes of volcanic rocks, emphasizing the importance of understanding these aspects for monitoring volcanic hazards effectively.

Hydrothermal alteration can result in pore pressurization and volcano instability

Michael J. Heap et al.

Summary: The collapse of a volcanic flank can be destructive and deadly. Hydrothermal alteration is common to volcanoes worldwide and is thought to promote volcano instability by decreasing rock strength. However, some laboratory studies have shown that not all alteration reduces rock strength. Our new laboratory data for altered rhyodacites from Chaos Crags (Lassen volcanic center, California, USA) show that pore- and crack-filling mineral precipitation can reduce porosity and permeability and increase strength, Young's modulus, and cohesion, ultimately leading to increased pore fluid pressure and volcano deformation. Monitoring hydrothermal alteration and incorporating it into hazard assessments is crucial for volcano risk management.
