Quantifying the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction Induced by the Bulk Magnetic Asymmetry

Qihan Zhang et al.

Summary: It is generally believed that a broken interfacial inversion symmetry in ultrathin ferromagnet/heavy metal (FM=HM) bilayers is necessary for accommodating the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) and stabilizing chiral spin textures. In this study, the contributions of bulk magnetic asymmetry (BMA) induced by composition gradient and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) to DMI are systematically examined through experiments and theoretical calculations. The results show that both BMA and SOC play pivotal roles in achieving a sizable amplitude of DMI in certain thick films.

Neel-Type Elliptical Skyrmions in a Laterally Asymmetric Magnetic Multilayer

Baoshan Cui et al.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics of elliptical magnetic skyrmions formed in Pt/Co/Ta multilayers with an oblique-angle deposited Co layer, and finds that their formation is correlated with the anisotropic effective perpendicular magnetic anisotropy energy density and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction.

Helium Ions Put Magnetic Skyrmions on the Track

Romeo Juge et al.

Summary: Magnetic skyrmions can be successfully created and guided in racetrack devices using focused He+-ion-irradiation, leading to stable and isolated skyrmions. By tuning the magnetic properties, the maximum skyrmion velocity can be enhanced, suppressing the skyrmion Hall effect and opening up new possibilities for practical applications.

Antiferromagnetic skyrmion-based logic gates controlled by electric currents and fields

Xue Liang et al.

Summary: The research team investigated the dynamics of skyrmions in antiferromagnets and found a way to control them using driving current and voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy gradient. They also proposed a design of logic computing gates based on skyrmion manipulation, which successfully performed basic Boolean operations.

Magnetic skyrmions and bimerons in films with anisotropic interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

O. G. Udalov et al.

Summary: The article discusses topologically nontrivial magnetic textures (skyrmions, antiskyrmions, and bimerons) in a thin magnetic film with anisotropic interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (iDMI), analyzing their internal magnetic structure and stability through micromagnetic simulations and analytical considerations. The orientations of skyrmions, antiskyrmions, and bimerons respond differently to variations in the iDMI anisotropy, with bimerons potentially consisting of various magnetic configurations depending on the strength of the anisotropy. This iDMI anisotropy, induced experimentally through strain on the magnetic film, is studied with a phenomenological approach to establish the strain-iDMI relation.
