N-(3-methylbutyl)butanamide: A novel amide in the venom of female social wasps, Vespula vulgaris

Ashraf M. El-Sayed et al.

Summary: In New Zealand's beech forests, the venom of the wasp Vespula vulgaris (L.) contains two compounds that have a strong repellent effect on worker wasps. This is the first report of these compounds in nature and the first chemical analysis of V. vulgaris gyne venom. The results suggest a need to reassess our understanding of the function of the alarm pheromone.

Nesting Ecology and Colony Survival of Two Invasive PolistesWasps (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) in New Zealand

Rose McGruddy et al.

Summary: The invasive paper wasp species Polistes dominula prefers suburban and coastal environments, with higher abundance and colony survival rates compared to Polistes chinensis. P. dominula nests are larger and more productive, posing a potential threat to native species in these areas. Management efforts should focus on protecting native species in suburban and coastal environments.
