Summary: Optical metasurfaces, composed of 2D scatterers, can control the properties of an incidence field. This article presents a theory that analytically links the properties of the scatterers to their optical response using the lattice coupling matrix. The proposed theoretical approach proves to be a powerful tool for designing and analyzing metasurfaces.

Summary: This study explores the potential of near-field mapping of photonic eigenmodes supported in planar dielectric nanocavities using electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). The results show a correlation between EELS excitations and optical eigenmodes, providing insights for photonic engineering applications. The study also demonstrates the high spatial definition of EELS maps and how eigenmode characteristics can be translated into their EELS signatures.

Broadband Forward Light Scattering by Architectural Design of Core-Shell Silicon Particles

Maria Letizia De Marco et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the synthesis of Mie-resonant core-shell particles with overlapping electric and magnetic dipole resonances in the visible spectrum, allowing for tuning of the relative position and intensity of these resonances. Coating high-index particles with low-index shells coalesces the dipoles while maintaining high scattering efficiency, leading to broadband forward scattering. This synthetic strategy opens up new possibilities for metamaterial fabrication with unprecedented control over visible light manipulation.

Fundamental Limitations of Huygens' Metasurfaces for Optical Beam Shaping

Carlo Gigli et al.

Summary: Optical dielectric metasurfaces composed of arrayed nanostructures allow for arbitrary spatial control of incident wavefronts with subwavelength resolution. Two physical effects are typically used for phase modulation, with one requiring high aspect ratios and the other being flatter and easier to manufacture. By comparing the two approaches, fundamental limitations of the latter method are identified, such as symmetry breaking.
