A strong mitigation scenario maintains climate neutrality of northern peatlands

Chunjing Qiu et al.

Summary: Northern peatlands are at risk from climate warming and soil drying, which could result in increased CO2 emissions and methane release. Our study highlights the importance of understanding the potential carbon losses from northern peatlands in future warming scenarios.

Half of global methane emissions come from highly variable aquatic ecosystem sources

Judith A. Rosentreter et al.

Summary: The study shows that aquatic ecosystems play a significant role in global methane emissions, with emissions varying greatly within and between different types of aquatic systems. Methane emissions increase from natural to impacted aquatic ecosystems and from coastal to freshwater ecosystems.

Influence of permafrost thaw on an extreme geologic methane seep

Taylor D. Sullivan et al.

Summary: The occurrence and magnitude of natural fossil methane emissions in the Arctic are poorly known, with particular interest in geologic CH4 emissions due to the potential for positive feedback to climate warming. In Esieh Lake, geologic CH4 is being vented through pockmarks on the lake bottom, making it one of the highest flux geologic CH4 seep fields known on land. The poleward retreat of continuous permafrost may lead to more subcap methane release with increased permafrost thaw.
