Who is asked about alcohol consumption? A retrospective cohort study using a national repository of Electronic Medical Records

Alexander Singer et al.

Summary: Documentation of alcohol use in EMR plays a crucial role in reducing alcohol-related morbidity and mortality. This study found that 40% of patients had alcohol use documentation, with male patients, older patients, and those with conditions like hypertension or depression more likely to have their alcohol use documented. Only 4.7% of patients were documented with heightened risk for alcohol-related problems. Strategies should be developed to ensure consistent alcohol screening among high-risk patients.
