Evolution of the transport properties of soil aggregates and their relationship with soil organic carbon following land use changes

Feng Wang et al.

Summary: Through studying soil samples archived from a reversion experiment initiated in 2008 at Rothamsted Research in the UK, it was found that the intra-aggregate reconfiguration following management changes is a slow process, and the ability of pore space to transport substrates is more important than the habitat they provide in SOC stabilization.

Deep-C storage: Biological, chemical and physical strategies to enhance carbon stocks in agricultural subsoils

Erik S. Button et al.

Summary: Subsoils have untapped potential for long-term carbon sequestration, but there is incomplete knowledge about their behavior and manageability. Proposed strategies for carbon sequestration in subsoils need to be further assessed and barriers and opportunities for implementation identified. More long-term studies and consistent inclusion of subsoils in soil carbon stock estimations and modeling are crucial for devising effective strategies to combat climate change and declining soil quality.

Relationship between soil carbon sequestration and the ability of soil aggregates to transport dissolved oxygen

Xiaoxian Zhang et al.

Summary: The stability of soil carbon is not solely determined by its molecular complexity or adsorption to clay, but also by physicochemical protection such as occlusion in aggregates and sorption-precipitation with organo-mineral associations. Microbial dissolution of organo-mineral complexes and adsorbed SOC under anoxic conditions is an important pathway in the carbon cycle. Through simulation models based on two long-term experiments, it was found that the accrual of SOC is positively correlated with the diffusion coefficient of aggregates to transport oxygen, with a plateauing effect observed when SOC exceeds a certain threshold.

Denitrifying pathways dominate nitrous oxide emissions from managed grassland during drought and rewetting

E. Harris et al.

Summary: The study found that under severe drought conditions, denitrification pathways dominated N2O emissions in managed grasslands. Despite high variability in fluxes, denitrification continued to be the main emission pathway during rewetting, indicating feedback between precipitation changes and N2O emission pathways.

Metabolic capabilities mute positive response to direct and indirect impacts of warming throughout the soil profile

Nicholas C. Dove et al.

Summary: Increasing global temperatures are predicted to stimulate soil microbial respiration. The study found that elevated temperatures resulted in altered microbial community composition in surface soils, but had different effects on subsoil microbes. Subsoil microbes had lower carbon use efficiencies and growth rates compared to surface soils, limiting their communities.

Significant structural evolution of a long-term fallow soil in response to agricultural management practices requires at least 10 years after conversion

Aurelie Bacq-Labreuil et al.

Summary: Agricultural practices can significantly influence the physical and biological properties of soil, with conversion to grassland leading to notable changes in soil structure over a period of at least a decade post-conversion. Conversion to arable land, on the other hand, did not show a significant impact on soil structural evolution.
