MECANISMOS DE FERTILIZAcAO INFERIDOS ATRAVeS DO REGISTRO DE COCOLITOFORiDEOS DURANTE O QUATERNaRIO TARDIO NA MARGEM CONTINENTAL SUL-BRASILEIRA

Juliana de Freitas Goncalves et al.

Summary: This study aims to infer the mechanisms of fertilization from the coccolithophorid record during the Late Quaternary in the southern Brazilian Continental Margin. The results indicate that fertilization mechanisms are controlled by insolation and influenced by atmospheric processes. The highest productivity during the glacial period is associated with the expansion of the upwelling system driven by northeast winds, while the highest productivity in the early Holocene is attributed to the decrease in sea level.

Summary: This study presents analyses of sediments from the lower slope of the Pelotas Basin in the southern Brazilian continental margin, revealing insights into sedimentary age, composition, and influences from different water masses. The research also highlights the sediment transport mechanisms in this area.

A Multi-Proxy Approach to Unravel Late Pleistocene Sediment Flux and Bottom Water Conditions in the Western South Atlantic Ocean

G. L. Mathias et al.

Summary: The study reveals that sediments in marine sediment core GL-1090 from the southwestern South Atlantic Ocean are primarily sourced from the Plata River in southeastern South America and transported northward by the Brazilian Coastal Current, with delivery modulated by sea-level oscillations. Terrigenous sediment input significantly increased during periods of low sea level, while variations in biogenic magnetite content following glacial-interglacial cycles were observed based on environmagnetic parameters.

Evidence of supra-lysoclinal dissolution of pelagic calcium carbonate in the late Quaternary in the western South Atlantic

Sandro M. Petro et al.

Summary: This study aims to identify minor changes in the preservation of foraminiferal assemblages in the supra-lysoclinal zone, using Late Quaternary samples from the Pelotas Basin continental slope. The best preservation indexes are associated with North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) influence, while periods of relative greater dissolution are linked to the advance of Upper Circumpolar Deep Water (UCDW). Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 5 and MIS 1 show the best preservations, with MIS 4, 3, and 2 exhibiting relatively poorer preservation.
