The mechanism of action of N-acetylcysteine (NAC): The emerging role of H2S and sulfane sulfur species

Brandan Pedre et al.

Summary: Originally used as a mucolytic, N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is now a standard treatment for paracetamol poisoning and a widely used antioxidant. In addition to its traditional mechanisms, a newly discovered mechanism involves the conversion of NAC into hydrogen sulfide and sulfane sulfur species, which may explain many of its effects.

Simultaneous determination of DL-cysteine, DL-homocysteine, and glutathione in saliva and urine by UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS: Application to studies of oxidative stress

Qingkun Ma et al.

Summary: A high-sensitivity and -selectivity mass spectrometry derivatization reagent, NCS-OTPP, was developed for enantiomeric separation of chiral thiol compounds. Complete separation of GSH, DL-Cys, and DL-Hcy was achieved, with good linear relationships, precision, and recoveries. The thiol compounds were quantitatively related to oxidative stress state changes in saliva and urine.

Colorimetric determination of cysteine based on inhibition of GSH-Au/Pt NCs as peroxidase mimic

Jian-Jun Li et al.

Summary: A facile and highly sensitive strategy for colorimetric detection of cysteine using bimetallic nanoclusters as peroxidase mimics was reported, with promising application in urine analysis. The method provides a valuable approach for visualization and quantitative detection of cysteine with different concentrations in a range of 0.5 to 30 μM, with a detection limit of 0.154 μM.
