Genomic analyses provide insights into spinach domestication and the genetic basis of agronomic traits

Xiaofeng Cai et al.

Summary: This study presents a high-quality reference genome assembly of spinach and population genomic analyses, shedding light on genome rearrangements during spinach domestication and the impact of artificial selection on spinach phenotypic evolution. This research also identifies domestication sweeps in the spinach genome associated with important traits, providing valuable resources for spinach breeding.

Loci discovery, network-guided approach, and genomic prediction for drought tolerance index in a multi-parent advanced generation intercross (MAGIC) cowpea population

Waltram Ravelombola et al.

Summary: Large phenotypic variation in drought tolerance indices was observed among cowpea genotypes in the MAGIC population. A total of 14, 18, 5, 5, and 35 SNPs were associated with different traits related to drought tolerance. The network-guided approach revealed clear interactions between loci associated with drought tolerance traits, and genomic selection yielded varying levels of accuracy.

High resolution mapping and candidate gene identification of downy mildew race 16 resistance in spinach

Gehendra Bhattarai et al.

Summary: In this study, a genomewide association analysis approach was used to map the resistance loci of spinach against the Peronospora effusa race 16, leading to the identification of associated single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers and candidate genes. The discovery of six significant SNPs and the mapping of the resistance locus to a specific region on chromosome 3 provide valuable insights into the genetic basis of downy mildew resistance in spinach. These results could potentially aid in the selection of resistant spinach lines in breeding programs.

A spinach genome assembly with remarkable completeness, and its use for rapid identification of candidate genes for agronomic traits

Hideki Hirakawa et al.

Summary: A high-quality spinach genome assembly, SOL_r1.1, was constructed using long-read and linked-read technologies, which significantly improved spinach breeding efficiency. The assembly contained 287 scaffolds and showed a low proportion of undetermined nucleotides, with high gene completeness. Additionally, multiple resistance gene analogues were identified in the genome.

An anchored chromosome-scale genome assembly of spinach improves annotation and reveals extensive gene rearrangements in euasterids

Amanda M. Hulse-Kemp et al.

Summary: The study assembled and annotated the genome of spinach, developing a chromosome-level genetically anchored assembly. The long-read assembly predicted significantly more genes compared to the short-read assembly. Spinacia was confirmed to be a paleohexaploid with biased resistant gene motifs typical of monocots. Diversity analysis indicated ample variation in genes for hypothesis-driven genomic-assisted breeding.

Genome-Wide Association Study and Genomic Prediction for Soybean Cyst Nematode Resistance in USDA Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) Core Collection

Ainong Shi et al.

Summary: Evaluation of SCN resistance in the USDA common bean core collection revealed 15 accessions resistant to SCN HG Type 0 and 62 moderately resistant accessions. Genome-wide association study identified 11 SNP markers strongly associated with resistance to HG Type 0. The study provides valuable information for developing SCN-resistant common bean cultivars.
