Dissecting the molecular mechanism of russeting in sand pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai) by metabolomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics

Chun-Hui Shi et al.

Summary: Brown coloration, rough appearance, and russeting are unique features of the popular Asian sand pear. The mechanism behind russeting is still unclear, but it is known to be sensitive to water fluctuations. Through multi-omics analysis, it was found that russeting in sand pear involves the biosynthesis and transport of suberin and other secondary metabolites.

MetaboAnalyst 5.0: narrowing the gap between raw spectra and functional insights

Zhiqiang Pang et al.

Summary: MetaboAnalyst version 5.0 has been introduced to facilitate comprehensive metabolomics data analysis and interpretation, with the aim of narrowing the gap from raw data to functional insights. Three new modules have been developed to assist in this goal, along with various other new functions and improvements in interface, graphics, and codebase. Users can now easily switch between compatible modules for a streamlined data analysis experience.

Transcriptomic analysis of cork during seasonal growth highlights regulatory and developmental processes from phellogen to phellem formation

Sandra Fernandez-Pinan et al.

Summary: This study identified molecular processes from phellogen to mature phellem cells by studying different growth stages of cork oak. Cell cycle regulation and differentiation were upregulated in the early stage of cork growth, while metabolic processes related to phellem cell composition were emphasized in the later stages.

Sphingolipid metabolism, transport, and functions in Recent and future

Ning-Jing Liu et al.

Summary: Sphingolipids, diverse in structure and function across plant species, play essential roles in membrane organization, plant developmental regulation, and stress responses. Studies have identified over 300 plant sphingolipids and revealed their unique properties and distribution within lipid membranes. Challenges and issues in studying sphingolipids are also highlighted for further research.

The GORKY glycoalkaloid transporter is indispensable for preventing tomato bitterness

Yana Kazachkova et al.

Summary: By studying nine bitter-tasting accessions, including the 'high tomatine' Peruvian landraces, researchers found a deletion in the GORKY gene, which mediates the subcellular localization of alpha-tomatine during fruit ripening; GORKY exports alpha-tomatine and its derivatives from the vacuole to the cytosol, facilitating the conversion of the entire alpha-tomatine pool to non-bitter forms; these findings suggest that GORKY activity is a notable innovation in the process of tomato fruit domestication and breeding.
