Biochar-induced priming effects in soil via modifying the status of soil organic matter and microflora: A review

Maria Rasul et al.

Summary: Biochar (BC) application shows potential for integration into carbon-trading systems due to its environmental and economic benefits. However, despite increased research attention, the mechanisms of BC-induced priming effects on soil organic carbon mineralization have not been fully understood. This review highlights the importance of BC properties and abiotic factors in influencing soil microclimate, priming effects, and carbon stabilization, aiming to support the sustainable use of BC for agricultural crop production.

Ecological risk assessment and environment carrying capacity of soil pesticide residues in vegetable ecosystem in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area

Yuheng Yang et al.

Summary: This study proposed a modified system for estimating the soil environmental carrying capacity (SECC) of pesticide residues in agricultural soils based on the concept of ecological risk assessment. The assessment of ecological risk and SECC of soil pesticide residues in vegetable ecosystem was performed in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area (TGRA). The results showed that the vegetable ecosystem in TGRA has a high risk of pesticide contamination, with pyrethroid insecticides and herbicide glyphosate being the most frequently and highly detected. This study provides important guidance for the rational application of pesticides and control of soil environmental risks in order to achieve agricultural green development in the TGRA.

The contributions of biotic lines of defence to improving plant disease suppression in soils: A review

Nwabunwanne Lilian Nwokolo et al.

Summary: The majority of plant infections caused by pathogens occur beneath the soil surface, potentially leading to food shortages and economic losses. Every soil harbors unique microbial communities that can participate in plant defense, with plants and their holobiont interacting to enhance plant tolerance to biotic stress. Understanding the basic lines of defense in the soil environment is crucial for soil and plant microbiome engineering to improve disease suppression.

The role of biochar particle size and application rate in promoting the hydraulic and physical properties of sandy desert soil

Guiquan Fu et al.

Summary: The study found that biochar can increase the porosity and number of micropores in sandy desert soil, enhancing soil saturation water content and structure stability. Biochar application rate has a greater impact on soil water holding capacity, available water content, permanent wilting point, porosity, and specific surface area than biochar particle size.

The Use of Biochar for Plant Pathogen Control

Jorge Poveda et al.

Summary: Biochar, as a soil amendment, controls root or foliar fungal pathogens by modifying root exudates, soil properties, and nutrient availability to influence the growth of antagonist microorganisms. It induces systemic plant defenses, activates stress-hormone responses, and changes active oxygen species, showing coordinated hormonal signaling within the plant. Additionally, biochar promotes changes in soil microbiota influencing pathogen motility and colonization, as well as inducing plant systemic defenses, contributing to disease suppression.

Emerging infectious diseases threatening food security and economies in Africa

Gudeta W. Sileshi et al.

Summary: Emerging infectious plant diseases (EIPD) present significant challenges to global food systems, especially in Africa where 14 EIPDs have been identified as potentially causing over $1.4 billion in annual losses. Factors favoring disease emergence include evolution of hypervirulent pathotypes, introduction of alien invasive species, intensification and simplification of agroecosystems, climate change, and lack of biosecurity policies. Current research focuses on single host-pathogen interactions and breeding for race-specific resistance, but greater emphasis on biosecurity and diversification of agroecosystems is recommended to mitigate the impacts of EIPDs.

Biological Control of Plant Diseases: An Evolutionary and Eco-Economic Consideration

Dun-Chun He et al.

Summary: Biological control is a promising alternative to pesticides and plant resistance for managing plant diseases, but a better understanding of its natural and societal functions is needed for endorsement. The introduction of biological control agents alters interactions among plants, pathogens, and environments, leading to cascading effects that influence pathogen fitness, plant health, and ecological function. Evaluating the benefits and costs of biological control from social and farmer perspectives is crucial for sustainable development and deployment, and a shift in disease control philosophy is necessary to consider multiple aspects such as crop productivity, ecological function, social acceptability, and economic accessibility.

Plant pathogen infection risk tracks global crop yields under climate change

Thomas M. Chaloner et al.

Summary: The study modeled the impact of future temperature changes on infection risk for 80 fungal and oomycete crop pathogens on 12 major crops, predicting increased risk and crop yield at higher latitudes and major shifts in pathogen assemblages in high-latitude regions. The findings suggest that while high-latitude areas may see both increased yields and infection risks, tropical regions may experience little to no productivity gains and decreased infection risk. Major changes in pathogen assemblages are also expected in the United States, Europe, and China.
