Sulfone-based electrolytes for high energy density lithium-ion batteries

Hao Jia et al.

Summary: In this work, localized high concentration electrolytes (LHCEs) based on tetramethylene sulfone (TMS) were designed. TMS-based LHCEs can achieve excellent compatibility with high energy density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) when combined with a proper additive. The unique solvation structure of LHCEs facilitates the formation of highly effective solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and suppresses the degradation of positive electrode materials in LIBs. The superior interphasial properties of LHCEs are the key to realizing the long lifespan of high energy density LIBs.

Demonstrating Apparently Inconspicuous but Sensitive Impacts on the Rollover Failure of Lithium-Ion Batteries at a High Voltage

Sven Klein et al.

Summary: Layered oxides like Li[Ni0.5Co0.2Mn0.3]O-2 (NCM523) are promising cathode materials for high-energy lithium-ion batteries, but face challenges of transition metal dissolution leading to electrode cross-talk and rollover failure. Various modifications, including coating with aluminum oxide and altering cell formation protocols, can postpone or reduce rollover failure. Specific test protocols influence the appearance of rollover failure but it can disappear at higher C-rates due to more homogeneous distribution of Li-metal dendrite formation. Overall, rollover failure is a complex phenomenon dependent on subtle parameters.

Summary: The energy density of LIBs has been increased threefold since their introduction, but the capacity of transition metal oxide cathodes is approaching its limit due to stability limitations of electrolytes. To further enhance energy density, new high-capacity and high-voltage cathode materials need to be explored, and graphite anodes may need to be replaced. One of the main challenges for future development is the development of new electrolyte compositions that can accommodate high-voltage cathodes and anodes while ensuring the stability of the batteries.
