Divergent Aminolysis Approach for Constructing Recyclable Self-Blown Nonisocyanate Polyurethane Foams

Florent Monie et al.

Summary: This study reports an approach to fabricate self-blown nonisocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) foams by utilizing the divergent chemistries of amines with cyclic carbonates, creating the polymer network and thiolactone, and delivering in situ a thiol that generates the blowing agent (CO2) by reaction with a cyclic carbonate. The foams can be easily repurposed into films or structural composites by thermal treatment, showing recyclability. This facile and robust process offers new possibilities for designing more sustainable PU foams and provides options for end-of-life repurposing.

Design and Synthesis of Hybrid Thermo-Responsive Hydrogels Based on Poly(2-oxazoline) and Gelatin Derivatives

Annelore Podevyn et al.

Summary: The combination of natural and synthetic polymers to form hybrid hydrogels offers the potential of fabricating new materials with dual polymer properties. This study synthesized two alkene-functionalized poly(2-alkyl/aryl-2-oxazoline) (PAOx) copolymers and one gelatin derivative, thiolated gelatin (gel-SH), as precursors for hybrid hydrogels through a photo-induced radical thiol-ene crosslinking process. The results showed that hydrogels with an excess amount of PAOx precursor exhibited increased mechanical stability. The thermo-responsive properties of a specific hydrogel film were also investigated, showing promise for developing hybrid poly(2-oxazoline)-gelatin hydrogels with predictable properties.

Toward Adipose Tissue Engineering Using Thiol-Norbornene Photo-Crosslinkable Gelatin Hydrogels

Lana Van Damme et al.

Summary: In this study, thiol-norbornene crosslinkable gelatin-based materials were developed and compared to commonly used methacryloyl-modified gelatin (GelMA) in the context of adipose tissue engineering. The newly developed thiol-ene hydrogels showed similar gel fractions, swelling, and in vitro biodegradation properties, with mechanical properties closer to native fatty tissue compared to GelMA. The equimolar GelNB DS55% + GelSH DS75% composition not only exhibited similar biocompatibility but also superior differentiation of encapsulated cells into the adipogenic lineage, promising a new strategy for adipose tissue engineering.
