Metabolic Features of Saliva in Breast Cancer Patients

Lyudmila V. Bel'skaya et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the metabolic characteristics of saliva in breast cancer and evaluate the information content of its individual biochemical indicators. The results showed significant changes in several biochemical indicators in the saliva of breast cancer patients, which can be used for early diagnosis. The metabolic characteristics of saliva were different between ductal and lobular breast cancer.

Tumor microenvironment pathways: Cross regulation in breast cancer metastasis

Rama Rao Malla et al.

Summary: This review discusses the heterogeneous and complex nature of the tumor microenvironment (TME) in breast cancer metastasis. The cross-regulation of signaling pathways such as Hedgehog, Wnt, Notch, and NF-kB is crucial in promoting breast cancer progression and metastasis. The importance of stromal and immune cells, as well as their interaction, in bridging the metastasis is highlighted. The role of Hh, Notch, Wnt, and NF-kappa B pathways in supporting TME and controlling various aspects of breast cancer progression is also discussed. Additionally, the involvement of exosomes and miRNAs in the cross-regulation of TME cells and pathways is explored. The review concludes with an examination of targeted small molecule inhibitors and natural compounds as potential therapeutics targeting TME.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Breast cancer as an example of tumour heterogeneity and tumour cell plasticity during malignant progression

Fabiana Luond et al.

Summary: Tumour heterogeneity, arising from intrinsic and extrinsic factors, has negative impacts on therapy response and prognosis. Cancer cell plasticity enables rapid adaptation to microenvironmental cues, playing a critical role in tumour progression and heterogeneity.

Impact of a Breast Cancer Screening Algorithm on Early Detection

Carrie L. Sullivan et al.

Summary: This article discusses the impact of implementing a Breast Cancer Screening Algorithm (BCSA) at an employer-based health center in Indiana, which showed a need for improvement in screening mammogram rates among women ages 40 to 74 compared to the Healthy People 2030 target. The use of BCSA significantly increased the breast cancer screening rate within the health center.

Differential Glycosylation Levels in Saliva from Patients with Lung or Breast Cancer: A Preliminary Assessment for Early Diagnostic Purposes

Andrea Ragusa et al.

Summary: This observational study conducted on saliva glycoproteins found differential glycosylation patterns among subjects with breast or lung cancer and healthy volunteers, indicating the potential for a reliable and minimally invasive diagnostic protocol to discriminate between healthy and pathological subjects.

Indicators of L-arginine metabolism in saliva: A focus on breast cancer

Lyudmila V. Bel'skaya et al.

Summary: Patients with breast cancer exhibited significantly higher arginase activity and lower nitric oxide levels in saliva compared to controls. The 'arginase:NO' ratio was found to be highest in the breast cancer group at 1.48, suggesting potential diagnostic value for breast cancer in early stages. An increase in salivary cytokine levels in breast cancer patients may also warrant further independent research.
