Spatiotemporal variation of agricultural patterns in different geomorphologic and climatic environments in the eastern Loess Plateau, north-central China during the late Neolithic and Bronze Ages

Haiming Li et al.

Summary: This study explores the variation in agricultural systems in different environmental and prehistoric contexts in north-central China through archaeobotanical and radiocarbon dating analysis of Neolithic and Bronze Age sites. The results reveal differences in agricultural patterns due to climate conditions, landforms, and cultural interactions, with the cultivation of foxtail and broomcorn millet being consistent in the Hutuo River Valley and a mixed agriculture of millets, soybeans, and rice in other parts of Henan Province. The study also suggests that population growth played a role in the choice of main cultivated crops.

Analysis of event stratigraphy and hydrological reconstruction of low-frequency flooding: A case study on the Fenhe River, China

Yuqin Li et al.

Summary: This study identified sedimentary characteristics of low-frequency high-magnitude flooding events using stratigraphy and geochemical methods, with the timing of such events dated to 4200-3900 years BP using OSL dating. It provides valuable insights for predicting future extreme flooding events.

Feeding Shimao: Archaeobotanical and Isotopic Investigation into Early Urbanism (4200-3000 BP) on the Northern Loess Plateau, China

Pengfei Sheng et al.

Summary: This paper provides new evidence on the agricultural systems and strategies supporting Shimao and nearby sites, highlighting a shift from common millet to foxtail millet cultivation coinciding with regional climate change, which sustained early Bronze Age state societies and fueled the rapid emergence of social complexity in the northern Loess Plateau from 4200 to 3000 BP.

Collapse of the Liangzhu and other Neolithic cultures in the lower Yangtze region in response to climate change

Haiwei Zhang et al.

Summary: The Liangzhu culture in the Yangtze River Delta collapsed around 4300 years ago due to a short period of anomalously wet climate, with large-scale flooding causing the abandonment of the ancient city. Subsequent arid conditions further contributed to the demise of Neolithic cultures in the region. Major hydroclimatic changes between 4300 and 3000 years ago may have been influenced by the increasing frequency of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation in the context of weakened Northern Hemisphere summer insolation.

Towards a rigorous understanding of societal responses to climate change

Dagomar Degroot et al.

Summary: The scholarship of the 'history of climate and society' indicates that natural climatic changes had significant impacts on human societies before anthropogenic global warming. Despite widespread interest in this field, there are biases and challenges in accounting for the local effects and spatiotemporal heterogeneity of past climate changes. Researchers propose an interdisciplinary framework to understand climate-society interactions and uncover five pathways by which populations have survived and thrived in the face of climatic pressures.

Human settlement distribution patterns during the Longshan and Xinzhai-Erlitou periods and their hydrogeomorphic contexts in the Central Plains, China

Kaifeng Li et al.

Summary: The cultural transformation in late Longshan period in the Central Plains of China from a chiefdom-like society to a state-level society may have been influenced by the changes in hydrogeomorphic settings due to extreme floods around 4000 years ago along the Yellow River. This event led to significant human migrations and resettlements, affecting the distribution and concentration of settlements in the region.

Spatial Expansion of Human Settlement during the Longshan Period (∼4.5-∼3.9 ka BP) and Its Hydroclimatic Contexts in the Lower Yellow River Floodplain, Eastern China

Kaifeng Li et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the obvious spatial expansion of human settlements in the lower Yellow River floodplain during the Longshan period was mainly driven by changes in hydroclimatic conditions and human activities, leading to the shrinking of lakes and marshes and the creation of more arable land, which in turn attracted a rapid increase in the local population.

Holocene Environmental Archaeology of the Yangtze River Valley in China: A Review

Li Wu et al.

Summary: Research on Holocene environmental archaeology in the Yangtze River Valley has made significant progress in recent years, primarily focusing on paleoflood and sea-level change stratigraphical events. This research has deepened the understanding of large-scale regional Holocene environmental and cultural interaction within this area.
