A niobium-substituted sodium superionic conductor with conductivity higher than 5.5 mS cm-1 prepared by solution-assisted solid-state reaction method

Yujian Liu et al.

Summary: Introducing Nb5+ into NASICON-type solid electrolyte greatly improves the ionic conductivity, leading to a significant enhancement in total conductivity by reducing both grain boundary impedance and bulk impedance. This facilitates sodium ion transport within the crystal structure and results in stable cycling performance of symmetric cells with sodium metal electrodes.

A stable quasi-solid electrolyte improves the safe operation of highly efficient lithium-metal pouch cells in harsh environments

Zhi Chang et al.

Summary: In this study, the properties and behaviors of electrolytes confined in a sub-nanoscale environment were investigated. The electrolytes exhibited unusual characteristics, such as higher boiling points and extended voltage windows. When incorporated into lithium-metal batteries, the electrolytes resulted in cathodes without an electrolyte interphase and dendrite-free lithium-metal surfaces. Furthermore, pouch cells assembled with the electrolytes showed stable electrochemical performances even at a high working temperature of 90 degrees C.

Multifunctional Protection Layers via a Self-Driven Chemical Reaction To Stabilize Lithium Metal Anodes

Boyu Li et al.

Summary: A LiF-rich protection layer was developed in this study to enhance the safety and stability of Li metal anodes, enabling uniform Li deposition and inhibiting dendrite growth. When paired with different cathode materials, the batteries showed excellent capacity retention and cycling stability. A high energy density and long cycle life were achieved using a S/LixLLTO-Li pouch cell.

A Perspective on the Sustainability of Cathode Materials used in Lithium-Ion Batteries

Beth E. Murdock et al.

Summary: The rise of electric vehicles has highlighted the importance of lithium-ion batteries as a vital green technology, but the large-scale mining for battery materials raises concerns regarding resource depletion and environmental, social, and governance issues. Insufficient research has been conducted on the socioenvironmental impacts of lithium-ion battery technology in the past, and the potential implications of increased nickel use in material management and development disciplines also lack attention.
