Insights into the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction on 2D Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides

Zhenbin Wang et al.

Summary: In this work, the HER mechanism on 2D-TMDs was thoroughly investigated using density functional theory calculations and microkinetic modeling. It was found that the simulated cell size has an important influence on the calculated hydrogen adsorption energy and the activation barrier. The study proposes that the Mo site on MoS2 serves as a stabilized transition state rather than hydrogen adsorption. The activation barrier of the Heyrovsky reaction on 2D-TMDs scales with the hydrogen adsorption energy, but is displaced upward by approximately 0.4 eV compared to transition metals. This higher activation barrier is responsible for the lower activity of 2D-TMDs.

Vanadium Dopants: A Boon or a Bane for Molybdenum Dichalcogenides-Based Electrocatalysis Applications

Hui Ling Chia et al.

Summary: The search for clean and renewable energy sources is driven by concerns about energy shortages and climate change. Transition metal dichalcogenides have emerged as promising alternatives to conventional precious metal catalysts due to their abundance, low cost, and remarkable catalytic activity. Doping with vanadium can improve the electrical properties of these materials, but the effects on electrocatalytic performance vary depending on the stoichiometry of vanadium dopants and the specific electrochemical applications.

Concurrent Vacancy and Adatom Defects of Mo1-xNbxSe2 Alloy Nanosheets Enhance Electrochemical Performance of Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Ik Seon Kwon et al.

Summary: Alloyed Mo1-xNbxSe2 nanosheets exhibit enhanced electrocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution reaction due to increased defect density that promotes H atom adsorption. Calculations suggest that the alloy phase has more defects than individual NbSe2 or MoSe2, with a separated NbSe2 domain at x = 0.5 favoring the formation of Nb/Se vacancies and adatoms in a cooperative manner.

Phase-Transition Mo1-xVxSe2 Alloy Nanosheets with Rich V-Se Vacancies and Their Enhanced Catalytic Performance of Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Ik Seon Kwon et al.

Summary: In this study, Mo1-xVxSe2 alloy nanosheets were synthesized using a colloidal method to tune composition and induce phase transitions. The phase transition from the semiconducting MoSe2 to metallic VSe2 was observed at x = 0.7, along with the formation of significant V and Se vacancies. Density functional theory calculations confirmed the experimental results and showed enhanced electrocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution reaction at specific compositions due to the presence of active vacancy sites.
