Atomistic insights into highly active reconstructed edges of monolayer 2H-WSe2 photocatalyst

Mohammad Qorbani et al.

Summary: Systematic study of in-plane intrinsic defects and edge atoms is important for the design of low-dimensional photocatalysts. This study investigates the photocatalytic CO2 reduction to CH4 over reconstructed edge atoms of monolayer semiconducting WSe2. The results demonstrate that the consumed electron rate per edge atom is higher than the in-plane intrinsic defects, and nanoscale redox mapping confirms that the edge is the preferred region for charge transfer. These findings pave the way for designing a new class of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides as non-precious co-catalysts for hydrogen evolution or CO2 reduction reactions.

Boosting photocatalytic CO2 reduction in a ZnS/ZnIn2S4 heterostructure through strain-induced direct Z-scheme and a mechanistic study of molecular CO2 interaction thereon

Amr Sabbah et al.

Summary: The research successfully prepared a ZnS/ZnIn2S4 heterostructure, achieving high photochemical quantum efficiency by optimizing the Zn:In ratio. Electronic levels and band alignments were deduced from ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy and UV-Vis. Finally, evidence of the direct Z-scheme and CO2 adsorption during the photocatalytic reaction was verified through various experimental methods.

Summary: In this study, a cation substitution method incorporating Ag ions was introduced to control and passivate defect states in the bandgap of kesterite CZTSe, resulting in reduced density and depth of intrinsic defects. The introduction of 10% Ag-alloyed CZTSe demonstrated the shallowest defect states, less nonradiative recombination, and achieved the best power conversion efficiency of 10.2%.

Atomic heterointerface engineering overcomes the activity limitation of electrocatalysts and promises highly-efficient alkaline water splitting

Qiucheng Xu et al.

Summary: Alkaline water splitting for hydrogen production is a low-cost and scalable method that requires highly efficient electrocatalysts to decrease the barriers of hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions. Atomic heterointerface engineering is a promising strategy to overcome the intrinsic activity limitation of electrocatalysts.
