Recent advances of carbon-based nano zero valent iron for heavy metals remediation in soil and water: A critical review

Weiyu Liang et al.

Summary: Nano zero valent iron (nZVI) combined with carbon-based materials shows great potential for heavy metal remediation, but also faces challenges. Environmental factors and long-term efficacy are crucial for the practical application of carbon-based nano zero valent iron (C-nZVI) in remediation processes.

Remediation effect of mercapto-palygorskite combined with manganese sulfate on cadmium contaminated alkaline soil and cadmium accumulation in pak choi (Brassica chinensis L.)

Yingying Yong et al.

Summary: Cadmium pollution in alkaline soil in some areas of northern China seriously threatens agricultural production and human health. There is a lack of materials and methods for remediating cadmium pollution in alkaline soil, so it is necessary to further study economic and adaptive remediation and regulation techniques for cadmium pollution in alkaline soil.

Physiological impacts of zero valent iron, Fe3O4 and Fe2O3 nanoparticles in rice plants and their potential as Fe fertilizers

Mingshu Li et al.

Summary: Fe-based nanoparticles, including ZVI and Fe3O4 NPs, can enhance rice growth under Fe-deficient conditions, but do not show positive effects under Fe-sufficient conditions. Fe2O3 NPs show phytotoxicity and hinder plant growth at high concentrations.

The removal of heavy metal cations by sulfidated nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-nZVI): The reaction mechanisms and the role of sulfur

Li Liang et al.

Summary: The study found that S-nZVI had high removal efficiency for Hg(II), Ag(I), Cu(II), and Pb(II) but low efficiency for Ni(II) and Zn(II). The role of sulfur was significant in the removal process, as its form changed with the presence of heavy metals.

Computational study and optimization experiment of nZVI modified by anionic and cationic polymer for Cr(VI) stabilization in soil: Kinetics and response surface methodology (RSM)

Hao Bian et al.

Summary: The study successfully stabilized Cr(VI) in soil using nZVI modified with cationic polyquaternium-7 (M550-nZVI) or anionic carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-nZVI). M550-nZVI showed better resistance to oxidation, while CMC-nZVI exhibited higher reactivity and achieved a higher removal rate of Cr(VI).

Removal of heavy metal ions and polybrominated biphenyl ethers by sulfurized nanoscale zerovalent iron: Compound effects and removal mechanism

Xipeng Wei et al.

Summary: S-nZVI has been reported to effectively remove heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants, but the presence of co-existing cations can affect the removal efficiency of PBDEs. The study showed that the presence of certain heavy metal ions can inhibit the reduction of PBDEs by S-nZVI, while others can accelerate the transformation of organic pollutants.

A novel preparation of S-nZVI and its high efficient removal of Cr(VI) in aqueous solution

Hao Xu et al.

Summary: The chitosan-stabilized biochar supported S-nZVI composite with low aggregation and superior antioxidation was synthesized for the removal of Cr (VI) from wastewater. The optimized synthesis parameters were determined and the composite showed excellent Cr (VI) removal capacities along with remarkable tolerance to coexisting ions. The mechanism analysis revealed that the binding of Cr (VI) to CS@BC/S-nZVI was mainly a synergistic effect of reduction and electrostatic attraction.
