Effect of posture on pulmonary function and oxygenation after fast-tracking video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) lobectomy: a prospective pilot study

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the importance of early mobilisation in improving lung function and oxygen delivery after video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. Results showed that mobilisation from supine to standing position significantly increased forced expiratory volume in 1 s percentage by approximately 7.9% and oxygen saturation by about 1.8% without increasing pain.

Unplanned readmission and survival after video-assisted thoracic surgery and open thoracotomy in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer: a 12-month nationwide cohort study

Summary: Comparison between video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) and open thoracotomy (OT) in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients showed no difference in risk of unplanned readmission. Pulmonary complications, particularly pleural effusion and pneumonia, were major causes of 90-day readmissions and associated with higher mortality at 12 months. Improving prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment of pulmonary complications is crucial for both VATS and OT patients post-discharge.
