Tracking Turnover Among Health Care Workers During the COVID-19 Pandemic A Cross-sectional Study

Staffing Patterns in US Nursing Homes During COVID-19 Outbreaks

Summary: This cohort study examines the changes in nursing home staffing during and after a severe COVID-19 outbreak. The findings show that severe outbreaks led to significant declines in staffing levels due to increased absences and departures, which remained reduced even 16 weeks after the outbreak started. Facilities attempted to address the staffing challenges by temporarily increasing hiring, contract staff, and overtime, but these measures were not sufficient to fully replace lost staff, particularly certified nursing assistants. The study highlights the need for policy action to ensure adequate staffing levels during and after nursing home outbreaks to protect resident health.
