Halogens in Acetophenones Direct the Hydrogen Bond Docking Preference of Phenol via Stacking Interactions

Charlotte Zimmermann et al.

Summary: Phenol preferentially docks to the methyl side of acetophenone despite a predicted advantage, making it a challenging benchmark system for electronic structure methods. Halogenation has a pronounced effect on the hydrogen bonding preference, leading to clear differentiation in phenyl group stacking variants. The study also highlights the difficulty in quantifying structures where phenyl group interactions distort the hydrogen bond.

Multiple investigations of aqueous Eu(iii)-oxalate complexes: the reduction in coordination number and validation of spectral linear correlation

Dongfan Xian et al.

Summary: This study compares spectral results with theoretical calculations in a wide parametric space, including pH value and oxalate concentration, using time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy (TRLS), speciation modeling, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results provide direct evidence of the reduction in coordination number of Eu(iii) atoms upon coordination with oxalate in aqueous medium, and validate the applicability of spectral linear correlation in an aqueous system involving multiple species.

Benchmarking London dispersion corrected density functional theory for noncovalent ion-π interactions

Sebastian Spicher et al.

Summary: Charged atoms or molecules interacting with pi-systems through ion-pi interactions play a major role in various chemical and biological systems. This study compiled a molecular test set IONPI19 to evaluate different density functional approximations for interaction energies, finding that the double-hybrids PWPB95-D4/QZ and revDSD-PBEP86-D4/QZ are the most reliable methods for describing ion-pi interactions.

Theoretical study on conformational energies of transition metal complexes

Markus Bursch et al.

Summary: In this study, a comprehensive conformational energy benchmark set called TMCONF40 was generated for 40 challenging transition metal containing molecules using the CREST protocol. Low-cost composite DFT methods showed good performance when compared to high level reference values. Energetic ordering of the conformers was a key focus in the statistical evaluation.
