Origins of Electron-Transfer Regime in Persulfate-Based Nonradical Oxidation Processes

Wei Ren et al.

Summary: This review discusses the use of persulfate-based nonradical oxidation processes (PS-NOPs) in wastewater purification, focusing on recent advances in nonradical electron-transfer regimes, including design of catalysts, in situ/operando characterization/analytics, and understanding the origins of electron-transfer mechanisms. The study found that persulfate is activated by a catalyst to form surface activated complexes, which interact directly or indirectly with target pollutants for oxidation.

Ultrathin Cu-Fe oxide nanosheets boosting persulfate activation to remove organic pollutants with coupling and transformation between radical and nonradical mechanism

Mengxin Li et al.

Summary: The study investigates the feasibility and mechanism of peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation by Cu-Fe bimetallic nanosheets. The novel Cu-Fe oxide nanosheets (CuFe-OS) exhibit regular crystal texture, multiple metal-oxygen bonds, and abundant oxygen vacancies, distinguishing them from Cu-Fe oxide. These features contribute to an increase in organic pollutant removal efficiency and degradation rate constant compared to Cu-Fe oxide. The coupling function of radical and nonradical pathways drives the activation process, with O-1(2) and O-center dot(2)- as the primary reactive oxygen species. Abundant oxygen vacancies benefit the generation of O-center dot(2)- and the conversion of metallic ions. The bimetallic synergy in CuFe-OS boosts reversible redox cycles. This work provides a novel strategy for wastewater remediation and deepens the understanding of coupled radical and nonradical mechanisms.

Co/N co-doped carbonaceous polyhedron as efficient peroxymonosulfate activator for degradation of organic pollutants: Role of cobalt

Huiwang Dai et al.

Summary: The study synthesized a Co/N co-doped polyhedron carbonaceous catalyst (Co@N-C-2) with abundant mesoporous, high graphitization degree, and cobalt content via the pyrolysis of core-shell MOFs composite (ZIF-8@ZIF-67). The two cobalt species in Co@N-C-2 were found to play different roles in PMS activation, with Co-N-x serving as active sites for the O-1(2) evolution pathway and Co NPs enhancing electron transfer pathway. The catalyst showed superior catalytic performance in removing organic pollutants and high resistance to inorganic anions and natural organic matter.
