Decoding reactive structures in dilute alloy catalysts

Nicholas Marcella et al.

Summary: Rational catalyst design is crucial for energy-efficient and sustainable catalytic processes. This study combines X-ray absorption spectroscopy, activity studies, and kinetic modeling to understand the mechanism of catalytic reactions in dilute bimetallic catalysts. The results show that surface Pd ensembles containing a few Pd atoms are the active species, and the catalytic activity can be tuned by controlling the ensemble size.

Insight into Subsurface Adsorption Derived from a Lattice-Gas Model and Monte Carlo Simulations

Carson J. Mize et al.

Summary: By using a lattice-gas adsorption model that includes both surface and subsurface sites of a crystalline solid, we investigated the competition between subsurface and surface adsorption. The results show that oxygen adsorbed in the subsurface behaves differently from oxygen adsorbed at the surface in terms of behavior and properties.

PdAg/Ag(111) Surface Alloys: A Highly Efficient Catalyst of Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Minghao Hua et al.

Summary: In this article, the behavior of various Pd ensembles on the PdAg(111) surfaces for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) intermediates was systematically investigated using density functional theory (DFT) simulation. The findings showed that Pd monomer with a Pd subsurface layer exhibited the best predicted performance. The subsurface coordination was able to explain this phenomenon, which was further supported by the analysis of electronic properties. Another advantage of PdAg SAA was the atomic-dispersed Pd as adsorption sites, which significantly improved the resistance to CO poisoning. By adjusting the Pd ensembles on the catalyst surface, an ORR catalyst combination with both predicted activity and high tolerance to CO poisoning could be designed.

Order-Disorder Transition in Inorganic Clathrates Controls Electrical Transport Properties

Joakim Brorsson et al.

Summary: By combining first-principles calculations, atomistic simulations, and experimental measurements, the connection between chemical ordering and physical properties in inorganic clathrates has been revealed. An order-disorder transition in the quaternary clathrate series was discovered, leading to discontinuity in heat capacity and explaining the unusual temperature dependence of Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity. It is suggested that this phenomenon may not be limited to specific materials but could be observed in a wide range of inorganic clathrates and materials with chemical ordering on sublattices.

Hydrogen-Driven Surface Segregation in Pd Alloys from Atomic-Scale Simulations

Pernilla Ekborg-Tanner et al.

Summary: The study examines the behavior of surface alloys AuPd and CuPd in various H environments, utilizing simulations and thermodynamic analysis to determine H coverage and surface composition. Differences in segregation of Cu and Pd on the surface at different H coverages were observed in the two alloys, indicating complexity in the enrichment and depletion of Cu under different H coverages.

Emergence of Subsurface Oxygen on Rh(111)

Marie E. Turano et al.

Summary: This passage discusses the high mobility of oxygen atoms on transition metal surfaces under demanding pressures and temperatures, leading to rapid surface diffusion, absorption into the subsurface, and reemergence on the surface. The unique role of subsurface oxygen atoms in the chemistry of oxidized metal catalysts is highlighted, but little is known about their formation and return to the surface. Additionally, localized changes in surface chemistry can occur due to oxygen diffusion between the surface and subsurface being mediated by defects.

Summary: The activity of dilute Pd-in-Au nanoparticles catalyzing CO oxidation depends on pretreatment and gas environment, which may induce changes in Pd distribution at the surface. Kinetic studies reveal evidence of different reaction mechanisms for catalysts with varying Pd distribution, underscoring the importance of characterization under reaction conditions.
