Minisci-Type Alkylation of N-Heteroarenes by N-(Acyloxy)phthalimide Esters Mediated by a Hantzsch Ester and Blue LED Light

Jiacheng Li et al.

Summary: A synthetic method for the Hantzsch ester-mediated C2-alkylation of quinolines, isoquinolines, and pyridines using N-(acyloxy)phthalimide esters (NHPI) under blue LED light has been described. The metal-free protocol provides alkylated N-heterocyclic products with high yields and can be carried out at room temperature. The introduction of a chiral phosphoric acid enables an asymmetric version of the reaction with high enantiomeric excess values. The reaction mechanism involves the excitation of an electron-donor acceptor complex and the addition of a radical species to the N-heterocycle.

Organocatalyst-controlled site-selective arene C-H functionalization

Jian-Hui Mao et al.

Summary: The study developed an organocatalyst-controlled para-selective arene C-H functionalization strategy, addressing a persistent challenge in arene functionalization chemistry. By emulating enzyme catalysis, the chiral phosphoric acid catalyst provides an ideal chiral environment for stereoinduction, while the projecting substituents control the chemoselectivity and site-selectivity.

The ortho effect in directed C-H activation

Balazs L. Toth et al.

Summary: The study introduces a substrate-only-based model to interpret the influence of neighboring groups on the directing group in ortho-C-H bond activation reactions, defining the Ortho Effect (OE) for such situations. Simple descriptors like torsion angle and torsional energy are used to predict and explain substrate reactivity in directed C-H activation reactions. Structural and energetic criteria are set to evaluate the efficiency of the metalation step, providing guidance for organic chemists and predictions for reaction conditions for selected directing groups.
