Gas phase protonated nicotine is a mixture of pyridine- and pyrrolidine-protonated conformers: implications for its native structure in the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor

Naoya Takeda et al.

Summary: The gas phase protonated nicotine exhibits two protomers, pyridine and pyrrolidine, with varying relative populations depending on the thermalizing trap temperature. The combination of IR spectroscopy and electronic structure calculations reveals a small energy difference between the two protomers, and one of the pyrrolidine protomers closely resembles the X-ray structure of nicotine in the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR).

An ion mobility mass spectrometer coupled with a cryogenic ion trap for recording electronic spectra of charged, isomer-selected clusters

Jack T. Buntine et al.

Summary: Infrared and electronic spectra are crucial for understanding the properties of charged molecules and clusters in the gas phase. However, the interpretation of spectra can be complicated by the presence of isomers. In this study, an instrument is described that allows for the spectroscopic characterization of charged molecular clusters based on their isomeric form and mass-to-charge ratio.

Controlled ultrafast ππ*-πσ* dynamics in tryptophan-based peptides with tailored micro-environment

Marius Herve et al.

Summary: Researchers combined an electron spray source with ultrafast pump-probe UV-Vis spectroscopy to study pi pi*-pi sigma* coupling in tryptophan-based ions and used mass spectrometry to produce isolated molecular ions with a controlled micro-environment. They measured ultrafast photo-induced pi pi*-pi sigma* dynamics in tryptophan species in the presence of a single, charged adduct, observing a significant increase in timescale when changing the added adduct atom. A model was proposed to rationalize the results based on the effects of the adduct on the electronic structure of the molecule, offering perspectives on controlling ultrafast molecular processes by designing the micro-environment on the Angstrom length scale.

Experimental Confirmation of a Topological Isomer of the Ubiquitous Au25(SR)18 Cluster in the Gas Phase

Summary: High-resolution electrospray ionization ion mobility mass spectrometry has identified a gas-phase isomer of the well-studied Au-25(SR)(18) cluster, with relative abundance controlled by in-source activation. The measured properties of the new isomer match theoretical predictions closely, suggesting that structural dynamics play a role in gas-phase reactions of thiolate-protected gold clusters and that isomerization may be manipulated by external stimuli.

Picosecond excited-state lifetimes of protonated indazole and benzimidazole: The role of the N-N bond

Samuel J. P. Marlton et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of a protonated N-N chemical group in the excited-state deactivation of protonated indazole compared to its isomer protonated benzimidazole. Protonated indazole exhibits shorter lifetimes attributed to pi sigma* state mediated elongation of the protonated N-N bond, as determined by experimental results, quantum chemical calculations, and potential energy surfaces.

Summary: Electronic spectra of C-2n(+) (n = 6-14) clusters reveal predominance of monocyclic structures and increasing prevalence of bicyclic structures with higher carbon atom numbers. Variations in band widths across clusters suggest differences in non-radiative decay rates, with some clusters exhibiting rapid decay while others show slower deactivation.

Summary: The study investigated chiral recognition between amino acids and monosaccharides in the gas phase as a model for chemical evolution in interstellar molecular clouds. Results showed that the optical properties of Trp in the clusters induced by 285-nm photoexcitation were useful for identifying and quantifying pentose enantiomers. Additionally, pentose enantiomeric excess in solution could be determined from relative abundances observed in a single product ion spectrum of 285-nm photoexcited hydrogen-bonded clusters of H+(L-Trp) and pentose.

Relative Energetics of the Gas Phase Protomers of p-Aminobenzoic Acid and the Effect of Protonation Site on Fragmentation

Maria Demireva et al.

Summary: Guided ion beam tandem mass spectrometry (GIBMS) was used to study the energy-dependent threshold collision-induced dissociation (TCID) of two protonated isomers (protomers) of p-aminobenzoic acid (p-ABA). Differences between the protomers were clearly distinguished through fragmentation channels, product abundance, and identity observed. The results show that the relative stabilities of the two p-ABA protomers can be directly determined from experimental data and are nearly isoenergetic in the gas phase.

Investigating the mapping of chromophore excitations onto the electron detachment spectrum: photodissociation spectroscopy of iodide ion-thiouracil clusters

Summary: Laser photodissociation spectroscopy has been used to study the excited states and intracluster electron transfer in iodide complexes of non-native nucleobases with different sulfur atom substitutions. While photodepletion of I·4-TU and I·2,4-TU leads to the formation of the respective molecular anions, this behavior is not observed for I·2-TU. The spectral profiles of the clusters are largely determined by the nucleobase chromophore excitations.
