Improving the ZnO-photocatalytic degradation of humic acid using powdered residuals from water purification plant

Mohamed Elmougi et al.

Summary: Utilizing alum residuals and zinc oxide composites significantly improved the photocatalytic degradation of humic acid, increasing removal efficiency and reducing energy consumption. An artificial neural network model was developed for predicting removal efficiency under different operating conditions, with the optimum structure achieving a high coefficient of determination.

Fe/Mn- and P-modified drinking water treatment residuals reduced Cu and Pb phytoavailability and uptake in a mining soil

Quan Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that modified aluminum rich drinking water treatment residuals (Al-WTR) significantly reduced the uptake of toxic elements like copper and lead by plants in mining soil, indicating the potential for remediation of contaminated soils. The modification of raw Al-WTR increased its immobilization efficiency by increasing pH, specific surface area, and active functional groups, showing promise for field scale applications.

Water treatment sludge as precursor in non-dehydroxylated kaolin-based alkali-activated cements

J. Manosa et al.

Summary: The cement industry's production growth has led to an increase in CO2 and energy footprint, while the increase in drinking water production at water treatment plants due to population growth has resulted in more waste materials being produced. This research explores using alkali-activated cements (AACs) as a sustainable option to give water treatment sludge a new life cycle, offering properties and sustainability that can compete with ordinary Portland cement (OPC).
