Fracture-related infections after intramedullary nailing Diagnostics and treatment

Markus Rupp et al.

Summary: Intramedullary nailing is the preferred method for treating many fractures requiring surgery. This article provides an overview of the general principles and diagnostic criteria for fracture-related infections (FRI) after nail fixation, and suggests treatment recommendations based on case examples. Both implant-retaining and nail exchange procedures are options for acute infections, while a one-stage or two-stage procedure can be followed for chronic FRI after intramedullary nailing.

Can CRP Levels Predict Infection in Presumptive Aseptic Long Bone Non-Unions? A Prospective Cohort Study

Theodoros H. Tosounidis et al.

Summary: Study investigated correlation between elevated CRP and WBC levels in nonunion patients, finding elevated CRP levels increased infection risk. WBC count unreliable for predicting infection. All cases achieved solid union post-revision surgery.

The role of low-grade infection in the pathogenesis of apparently aseptic tibial shaft nonunion

Simon Hackl et al.

Summary: This study revealed that low-grade infection may play a role in tibial shaft nonunion even in the absence of clinical signs of infection. Nonunion with positive bacterial cultures required more time and surgical revisions to achieve healing.
