Historical Redlining Is Associated with Present-Day Air Pollution Disparities in US Cities

Haley M. Lane et al.

Summary: Communities of color in the United States are disproportionately exposed to higher levels of air pollution, and this study shows a connection between this disparity and the historical redlining policy. The research finds that air pollution levels have a consistent association with redlining grade, and the disparities in NO2 and PM2.5 pollution levels based on redlining grade are larger than those based on race and ethnicity.

Coupled Air Quality and Boundary-Layer Meteorology in Western US Basins during Winter: Design and Rationale for a Comprehensive Study

A. Gannet Hallar et al.

Summary: Wintertime episodes of high aerosol concentrations frequently occur in urban and agricultural basins and valleys, driven by persistent cold-air pools that limit mixing and modify chemistry. To address this issue, a workshop was held in September 2019 to plan a future research campaign in western U.S. basins, focusing on understanding the interconnections between atmospheric chemistry, boundary layer, and complex-terrain meteorology. Workshop participants identified two regions to study in Utah and California, highlighting the need for comprehensive observations to characterize meteorological-chemical linkages and validate coupled atmosphere-chemistry models.
