Beach-level 24-hour forecasts of Florida red tide-induced respiratory irritation

Shane D. Ross et al.

Summary: Accurately forecasting the respiratory irritation level caused by red tide can greatly improve the lives of people living in affected areas. This study trained two different models, one wind-based and one probabilistic self-exciting Hawkes model, using a database of beach conditions. The models were applied to red tide blooms and showed varying levels of accuracy depending on the beach, with the wind-based model performing the best on half of the beaches.

Phytoplankton community interactions and cyanotoxin mixtures in three recurring surface blooms within one lake

Victoria G. Christensen et al.

Summary: This study investigated cyanobacteria and 19 cyanotoxins in Kabetogama Lake (USA). Seven out of 19 toxins were detected in various combinations, with Anabaenopeptin A and B being detected in every sample. The detection frequency of Microcystin-YR was higher than that of Microcystin-LR, but the concentrations were generally low. Anabaenopeptins were found to correlate with six cyanobacterial taxa, while the potential toxin producing cyanobacteria, Microcystis, was significantly correlated to microcystin-YR.

Cyanotoxin mixture models: Relating environmental variables and toxin co-occurrence to human exposure risk

Victoria G. Christensen et al.

Summary: This study compared cyanotoxin mixture models to microcystin models, finding that comprehensive models explained more variability. The research demonstrated that cyanotoxin mixture models were able to simulate observations exceeding regulatory guidelines.

Interannual and Spatial Variability of Cyanotoxins in the Prespa Lake Area, Greece

Valentini Maliaka et al.

Summary: The Prespa Lakes area in Greece, consisting of Great and Lesser Prespa Lakes and Vromolimni Pond, is globally important for biodiversity but faces threats from cyanotoxins. While Great Prespa showed low microcystin concentrations, Lesser Prespa and Vromolimni exhibited considerable spatial variability, with higher cyanotoxin levels near the lakeshore in 2014. This indicates a potential threat to ecosystem functions in Lesser Prespa and Vromolimni.

Tracking a Surrogate Hazardous Agent (Rhodamine Dye) in a Coastal Ocean Environment Using In Situ Measurements and Concentration Estimates Derived from Drone Images

Margaux Filippi et al.

Summary: The study successfully tracked the movement of a dye in the ocean by releasing Rhodamine dye and using the DrOne Water Sampling System system to collect water samples at different locations. Reliable estimates of dye concentration distribution can be obtained during drone sampling and post-processing. This opens up new possibilities for using drones to detect and mitigate hazardous agents in the ocean in the future.
