Secondary organic aerosol formation and aging from ambient air in an oxidation flow reactor during wintertime in Beijing, China

Weiqi Xu et al.

Summary: The formation and aging processes of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) in megacities of China, particularly in winter, still have limited understanding. This study investigated the formation and aging processes of SOA in winter in Beijing using advanced analytical tools. The results showed that the aging process significantly enhanced the concentration of organic aerosols (OA), with an average increase of 0.9 μg/m3. The formation of more oxidized SOA during photochemical aging was highlighted. SOA contributed a significant portion to the total OA, with an average contribution of 47%. The study also found that SOA formation potential varied among different episodes, with biomass burning emissions being a major source of SOA in winter in North China Plain.

A dominant contribution to light absorption by methanol-insoluble brown carbon produced in the combustion of biomass fuels typically consumed in wildland fires in the United States

Khairallah Atwi et al.

Summary: In this study, carbonaceous aerosol particles generated from the combustion of three biomass fuels were analyzed using online and offline measurements and optical calculations. The research found that the light absorption properties of methanol-insoluble BrC species were underestimated by previous solvent extraction methods.

Long-term characterization of aerosol chemistry in cold season from 2013 to 2020 in Beijing, China

Lu Lei et al.

Summary: The study found significant changes in aerosol chemistry in Beijing during the cold season, with most chemical species showing reductions, especially chloride and organics. Starting from 2018, the changes in aerosol chemistry were closely related to different reductions in gaseous precursors and enhanced secondary processes.

Characteristics and sources of water-soluble organic aerosol in a heavily polluted environment in Northern China

Haiyan Li et al.

Summary: WSOA in PM2.5 collected during wintertime in a polluted city in Northern China was characterized and found to account for a significant portion of total OA mass, closely correlating with SOA. Positive matrix factorization analysis resolved WS-CCOA, WS-BBOA, and WS-OOA as major components of WSOA, with differing water solubilities and influences from coal combustion and biomass burning.

Aerosol characterization in a city in central China plain and implications for emission control

Zhijie Li et al.

Summary: This study conducted real-time measurements of fine particle composition in Kaifeng, Henan province, China, and found that nitrate and organics were the major components of non-refractory PM2.5. The aerosol composition varied significantly among different periods due to different meteorological conditions and chemical processing. The study also highlighted the limited effectiveness of local emission controls in mitigating air pollution in the Central China Plain region.
