Pigments-Iron-based red, yellow, and brown ochres

Georgios P. Mastrotheodoros et al.

Summary: Natural ochres, ranging in color from yellow to deep red and brown, have been widely used for decorative, artistic, and medicinal purposes since prehistoric times. This paper provides an overview of the range, composition, origin, properties, and potential processing of natural ochre pigments, as well as the production and processing of artificial ochres. It also discusses analytical techniques for ochres' identification and provenancing, along with guidelines for good practice, and offers insights on ochres' potential applications and limitations, including a discussion on ochres in the Greco-Roman world.

Source apportionment of magnetite particles in roadside airborne particulate matter

Tomasz Gonet et al.

Summary: The study found that vehicle brake wear is the main source of airborne magnetite in the roadside environment in the UK, accounting for 68%-85%. In comparison, diesel and petrol engine emissions account for 7%-12% and 2%-4% respectively, while background dust contributes around 6%-10%. The high magnetite content in vehicle brake wear may pose potential risks to human cardiovascular and neurological health.

Wildfire smoke impacts respiratory health more than fine particles from other sources: observational evidence from Southern California

Rosana Aguilera et al.

Summary: Wildfires are becoming more frequent and destructive due to climate change, with PM2.5 in wildfire smoke adversely impacting human health. Recent studies suggest wildfire PM2.5 may be more toxic than other sources of PM2.5. Adjusting air quality policies to consider the variability in PM2.5 impacts from different emission sources is essential.

Global-scale constraints on light-absorbing anthropogenic iron oxide aerosols

K. D. Lamb et al.

Summary: Measurements over the remote Pacific and Atlantic Oceans show that anthropogenic iron oxide aerosols (FeOx) are transported far from source regions with efficiency similar to black carbon particles. Comparison with black carbon aerosols reveals strong contrast in concentrations between the Northern and Southern Hemisphere Pacific, and confirms an upward revision of emissions based on model/observation comparison over the Pacific receptor region. Global-scale shortwave atmospheric heating generated by anthropogenic FeOx-like particles is estimated to be 0.3-26% of that of black carbon in remote regions with low aerosol concentrations.

Widespread phytoplankton blooms triggered by 2019-2020 Australian wildfires

Weiyi Tang et al.

Summary: Long-term droughts and climate-change-induced warming have led to more frequent and intense wildfires, impacting the environment and ecosystems. Aerosol emissions from fires can transport nutrients to the ocean, enhancing marine productivity. Research shows that aerosols from the 2019-2020 Australian wildfires fueled widespread phytoplankton blooms in the Southern Ocean.

Ocean fertilization by pyrogenic aerosol iron

Akinori Ito et al.

Summary: Aerosols supply bioaccessible iron to marine biota, impacting climate through biogeochemical feedbacks. Research shows that pyrogenic aerosol iron has higher solubility than lithogenic aerosol, with a significant contribution to atmospheric supply of dissolved iron to the ocean. Models suggest pyrogenic iron enhances marine productivity more efficiently than lithogenic sources, but quantifying its impact on marine biogeochemical cycles under changing air quality and climate remains challenging.

XAS study of Sn speciation in toothpaste

Morgane Desmau et al.

Summary: Research has shown that the stability of stannous species in toothpaste is influenced by both the composition of the paste and the time of opening, ultimately oxidizing into Sn(IV) hydroxide. Therefore, the rational design of toothpaste formulations to enhance the stability of stannous agents is crucial.
