Impact of high-speed rail on road traffic and greenhouse gas emissions

Yatang Lin et al.

Summary: The study shows that the construction of new high-speed rail routes in China has a significant impact on reducing road traffic and carbon emissions, primarily through substitution effects. The environmental benefits mainly come from replacing highway goods transport with conventional railways, and it is projected that under greener electricity conditions, high-speed rail in China can contribute even more to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector.

Near and long-term perspectives on strategies to decarbonize China's heavy-duty trucks through 2050

Nina Khanna et al.

Summary: China needs to significantly reduce CO2 emissions from heavy-duty trucks, and deploying battery electric and fuel-cell trucks starting in 2020 and 2035 respectively could achieve the largest emissions reduction by 2050. Near-term strategies such as improving efficiency and switching to liquefied natural gas could also halve current diesel consumption and CO2 emissions by 2050. The results highlight the importance of a mix of near- and long-term policy and technology options for decarbonizing China's heavy-duty trucks.

Deployment of fuel cell vehicles in China: Greenhouse gas emission reductions from converting the heavy-duty truck fleet from diesel and natural gas to hydrogen

Feiqi Liu et al.

Summary: Hydrogen fuel cells are gaining attention as a potential carbon mitigation strategy for heavy duty vehicles. This study calculates the greenhouse gas emissions of the Chinese heavy-duty truck fleet under four hydrogen fuel cell penetration scenarios, showing significant reductions in GHG emissions can be achieved by using fuel cell vehicles. By combining an analysis of the carbon intensity of various hydrogen production pathways with predictions of the future hydrogen supply structure in China and different penetration rates of heavy-duty fuel cell vehicles, practical applications of the research are provided.

The feasibility of heavy battery electric trucks

Bjorn Nykvist et al.

Summary: Research suggests that economic feasibility of heavy battery electric trucks might have been generally underestimated, as high-power fast charging technology can improve performance, especially in heavy loads and energy savings. Previous studies on competitiveness of heavy trucks are sensitive to assumptions about battery cost and lifetime.

Taking into account greenhouse gas emissions of electric vehicles for transportation de-carbonization

Yu Gan et al.

Summary: The development of plug-in electric vehicle market is influenced by international regulations, including super-credits and leakage effects. Due to these effects, sales of plug-in electric vehicles in China, the U.S., and the EU will result in greenhouse gas emissions increases of over 1 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent. Future regulatory designs should incentivize the development of new technologies while also reducing the risk of emissions increases elsewhere.
