Prominent dual Z-scheme mechanism on phase junction WO3/CdS for enhanced visible-light-responsive photocatalytic performance on imidacloprid degradation

Jianing Li et al.

Summary: The construction of a unique dual Z-scheme photocatalyst CW based on phase junction WO3 and CdS improved the photocatalytic efficiency for the degradation of IMD. The combination of phase junction and dual Z-scheme mechanism enhanced carrier utilization and redox potential, leading to significantly higher k(app) values compared to WO3 and CdS alone for IMD degradation. The trapping experiment and ESR confirmed the dual Z-scheme mechanism, while the analysis using LC-MS and DFT calculations provided detailed degradation pathways for IMD.

Maximizing the utilization of photo-generated electrons and holes of g-C3N4 photocatalyst for harmful algae inactivation

Dongxu Wang et al.

Summary: The efficient inactivation of algae under visible light irradiation is achieved using sulfuric acid exfoliated C3N4. The positive surface charge and small sized/ultrathin structure of the photocatalyst contribute to the high performance. Addition of H2O2 further improves the efficiency by reducing carrier recombination and generating more ·OH. The inactivation process involves decreased photosynthetic activity, membrane damage, cell rupture, and partial removal of organic matters.

Understanding the mechanism of interfacial interaction enhancing photodegradation rate of pollutants at molecular level: Intermolecular π-π interactions favor electrons delivery

Qiang Zhang et al.

Summary: Uncovering the interaction between photocatalyst and reaction substrate, as well as the subsequent electron transfer process, is crucial for achieving effective photodegradation of pollutants. In this study, using the reduced density gradient (RDG) method, we simulated the pi-pi interactions between the photocatalyst g-C3N4 and the pollutant molecule FLU. The results showed that the pi-pi interactions between g-C3N4 and FLU facilitated electron delivery, leading to improved charge separation efficiency and direct oxidation of FLU. Furthermore, we found that the charge transfer rate was determined by the valence band level of g-C3N4 and the EHOMO of FLU, with a deeper valence band position favoring faster charge transfer and enhancing the photocatalytic degradation rate of FLU. Additionally, we proposed the possible degradation pathways of FLU through theoretical calculations and identified intermediates. Our work provides new insights into the degradation of pollutants and the rational design of highly efficient photocatalysts.
