Arctic Ozone Depletion in 2019/20: Roles of Chemistry, Dynamics and the Montreal Protocol

Wuhu Feng et al.

Summary: Using a three-dimensional chemical transport model and satellite observations, researchers investigated the Arctic ozone depletion in winter/spring 2019/20 and compared it with previous years. Persistently low temperatures led to extensive chlorine activation, while weak dynamical replenishment played a key role in causing very low column ozone values in the region. The study also showed that the gradual recovery of the ozone layer over the past two decades alleviated the polar cap ozone depletion in March 2020 by around 20 DU.

Summary: Based on ground-based and satellite measurements, it is found that inorganic fluorine is accumulating less rapidly in the Southern Hemisphere than in the Northern Hemisphere over the past 20 years, which may be linked to changes in the Brewer-Dobson circulation.

Analysis of recent lower-stratospheric ozone trends in chemistry climate models

Simone Dietmueller et al.

Summary: Recent research shows significant discrepancies in the trends of lower-stratospheric ozone predicted by different chemistry climate models. These models fail to accurately replicate the observed coherent negative trends in ozone concentrations. The study also suggests that both natural variability and human-induced factors play important roles in influencing ozone trends in the lower stratosphere.

ML-TOMCAT: machine-learning-based satellite-corrected global stratospheric ozone profile data set from a chemical transport model

Sandip S. Dhomse et al.

Summary: High-quality stratospheric ozone profile data sets are crucial for understanding long-term ozone changes. This study utilizes a chemical transport model and ensemble learning method to create a merged 42-year stratospheric ozone profile data set. The data set shows excellent agreement with independent satellite-based data sets using pressure as a vertical coordinate.

The stratospheric Brewer-Dobson circulation inferred from age of air in the ERA5 reanalysis

Felix Ploeger et al.

Summary: This study investigates the global stratospheric Brewer-Dobson circulation (BDC) using ERA5 meteorological reanalysis data, finding a slower BDC compared to ERA-Interim. Age trends in ERA5 show a negative trend throughout the stratosphere, but with step-like fluctuations. Differences in the residual circulation between reanalyses likely contribute to variations in age values.

Using a network of temperature lidars to identify temperature biases in the upper stratosphere in ECMWF reanalyses

Graeme Marlton et al.

Summary: This study compared stratospheric temperature data measured by lidars in the Northern Hemisphere from 1990 to 2017 with the ERA-Interim and ERA5 reanalyses from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. It was found that ERA-Interim had a significant cold bias, while ERA5 showed a smaller bias with variations between cold and warm bias between 10 and 1 hPa. The introduction of COSMIC GPSRO in 2007 reduced the cold bias in ERA5, and the introduction of AMSU-A data caused variations in temperature bias between 1-10 hPa between 1997-2008.
