The role of ENSO flavours and TNA on recent droughts over Amazon forests and the Northeast Brazil region

Juan C. Jimenez et al.

Summary: Amazon tropical forests and the semiarid Northeast Brazil region have experienced severe droughts over the past two decades, impacting ecological systems, local populations, water and energy security, and subsistence agriculture. These drought events are often associated with El Nino events, anomalous warming over the Tropical North Atlantic, and sometimes an overlapping of these factors, but not all droughts can be linked to these climate phenomena.

Leaf surface water, not plant water stress, drives diurnal variation in tropical forest canopy water content

Xiangtao Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that leaf surface water (LWs) has a significant impact on the diurnal variation of canopy water content (CWC), despite LWs accounting for a small percentage of CWC. Ignoring LWs weakens the relationship between CWC and VOD. The contribution of LWs to CWC variation decreases over longer time scales.

Earth System Models Are Not Capturing Present-Day Tropical Forest Carbon Dynamics

Alexander Koch et al.

Summary: Tropical forests have been a significant carbon sink in the past few decades, but recent research shows that this sink is saturated and declining in the long term. Climate models and statistical models provide different projections on the future carbon sink, with potential impacts of climate change on tropical forest ecosystems. The discrepancies between model projections and observational data highlight the importance of accurately representing vegetation mortality in future climate projections.
